Quick Thoughts
Keep in mind that booking through Chase generally means missing out on the chance to get any elite status benefits or elite credit / hotel points for your stay. That said, if you’re booking a property where you do not value those things or at a property without a loyalty program, this will be a nice return on spend.
As noted under The Deal above, you need to book during March but can travel any time (i.e. you could book a hotel stay for February 2021 as long as you pay for it through the Chase portal during March 2020.

would you get charged a Foreign transaction fee for booking hotels abroad using the freedom through the chase UR portal?
Good question. I would expect not because you’re paying Chase rather than the foreign entity, but I don’t really know.
How would I lose elite points if I use my Freedom card, but make the reservation directly with the hotel and I am already an awards program member? for example, use Freedom to pay for a reservation made on the Hyatt site or IHG site, etc.? I would still earn Hyatt points or IHG points, right?
Isn’t there also the question of whether 5X UR is worth more than the greater (?) earnings available by booking Hilton stays using Surpass or Hyatt stays using the Chase World of Hyatt card?
Also, to get 5X UR, the reservation has to be made in March, but doesn’t it also have to be paid in advance? some brands don’t charge until you check in.
You won’t get 5x making the reservation directly with the hotel. You have to book through the Chase Ultimate Rewards travel booking site to get 5x.
Adding to that: reservations made through Chase Ultimate Rewards are prepaid. Again, you’re booking through Chase and paying Chase, not directly with the hotel.
It looks like in order to get the bonus UR you have to book through Chase’s travel portal, which counts as third party booking like hotwire or priceline, etc.. which for some places means forgoing perks, status, and points.
