Quick Thoughts
This is a very good rate for Apple. According to Cashbackmonitor.com, the mileage payout for Apple has only been higher twice in the past 15 months:
But do note the restrictions as they are a bit vague. Still, if you have a planned purchase that fits within the parameters, this could be a good return compared to the norm if you have a use for Delta SkyMiles. Note that as an alternative, Discover Deals offers 5% cash back through their portal (which would be doubled at the end of the first year if you are in your first year of card membership).
[…] morning, I posted a limited-time Quick Deal — Delta’s SkyMiles shopping portal was offering 6x on purchases with Apple (since expired). It’s rare to see such a high payout on Apple products, so I posted it as a […]
Tough call for me. Last night I ordered a new Mac from Apple, spend was about $3k. It’s not too late for me to cancel and re-do the purchase.
First I logged into the Chase UR rewards portal, which seemed to suggest that I would earn 2 UR per dollar on purchases via the portal, then clicked on the Apple.com link, and made my purchase there using my Amex Gold Business card (earns 2X on computer hardware). I had hope that I would earn 2X Amex MRs, plus maybe 1-2X UR for shopping through the UR portal (not sure how realistic it is to double dip that way – I saw a blog post elsewhere that suggested I should get both, though I’m skeptical – anybody know if that trick actually works?).
So as it stands, on the $3K purchase, I’ll pick up 2X Amex MR, and MAYBE 1-2X Chase UR too (if the double dip works).
Or I could cancel the first transaction, then just do it using the Delta offer, and end up with 6X Delta points.
6X is obviously better than 2X, 3X or 4X (although I have my doubts about that 3X or 4X). OTOH, Amex MR and Chase UR are worth a lot more than Skypesos (especially with all the sleazebag moves Delta continues to pull).
18,000 Delta points…
versus…
6,000 Amex MR (for sure) plus MAYBE an extra 3000 (perhaps 6000) UR points…
Hmmm.
Opinions?
