How to cancel US Bank credit cards via chat

4

Last week, Doctor of Credit reported a nice change in US Bank’s online chat function: it’s now possible to use it to cancel credit cards. Previously, you had to call in and talk to an actual phone agent, who would give you multiple reasons you should probably keep it, albeit with varying levels of conviction.

Getting to the US Bank chat function isn’t immediately intuitive, so we thought we’d post a quick step-by-step guide below.

How to find US Bank’s online chat function

First, go up to the “Need help?” menu in the top right corner of your online account. Select “Contact us:”

That will take you to another general help portal. You’ll be given a menu with a list of possible topics. Select “Credit card accounts:”

You’ll be shown a list of your credit cards. Select the one that you’d like to cancel, and you’ll then be given another list of help topics. Select “Other topic” at the very bottom:”

That will finally take you to a pop-up screen with the option to “Chat with a live agent.” Select that and get your cancel game on.

Quick Thoughts

This is a nice change to the cancel workflow for US Bank; I believe the only other major issuer that allows you to cancel via chat is Amex. Similarly, there’s still some roundabout falderah with the rep trying to convince you to keep the card. However, I’d much rather be able to do that in a chat screen while I’m doing other things than have to spend time on the phone.

This also works for bank accounts. Just closed a Biz Savings via chat.

I didn’t have the Chat option when selecting Checking/Savings on the Contact Us screen, but after following the steps in this article to chat about a credit card (I do have a personal US Bank credit card open), the rep you begin chatting with can simply transfer you to a banker via chat, and they can help close bank accounts (both personal and business).

Chat did appear for my biz checking for me using these steps while logged in.

I’ve also had many instances of success cancelling Chase cards via secure message. Like one message to them to cancel the card ending in XXXX and they reply back within a day that it’s done.
