I’m of two minds as to whether I think this is cool or silly, but with everyone stuck at home I thought it was worth passing on for those looking for a little entertainment. Airbnb is now offering live online “experiences”, ranging from stuff like cooking and yoga classes to a small group discussion with an Olympian or a lesson from a magician. The prices range wildly as you might expect, and a lot of this is stuff you could probably find on YouTube for free, but if you’re longing for some human interaction and you’d like to “travel” without leaving home, this might be kind of cool. To be clear, there aren’t any affiliate links in this post for this stuff — I just got the email and thought some readers may find it of interest.

Like I said, I saw this and part of me thought it sounded a little ridiculous to pay for many of these “experiences” that you could probably replicate for free online. On the other hand, I know I’m not the only person with cabin fever right now. Learning about Portugese tapas from someone in Lisbon or about how to do “K-beauty” makeup from a broadcaster/makeup artist in South Korea or wine from a wine expert might be interesting. I even saw a free class about African penguins from someone in South Africa. Maybe you just want a good laugh. There could be something that speaks to you.
I only noticed one free experience. Others ranged from under ten bucks to forty or fifty dollars at the time of writing. I know there are a myriad of places to take online classes and like I said I’m not totally sold on these, but based on the video I saw on this Olympians’s offering, it looks like it’s pretty interactive and it’s a commitment of about an hour or hour and a half for each one, so they are perhaps easier to spontaneously check out than some.
I’m not sure whether or not you can earn miles on Airbnb experiences (the British Airways page makes it sound like you’d only earn on experiences), but it may be worth clicking through a portal just in case.
For those with a particular skill to share, it looks like you could theoretically submit an experience for approval. I saw some non-travel experiences like “how to create a podcast”, so if you have a particular area of expertise perhaps you could even turn it into something with Airbnb experiences.
