Delta SkyMiles shopping has now launched a back-to-school shopping portal bonus, joining Alaska, Southwest, American, and United’s shopping portal promos — all of which offer a bonus that varies according to which spending threshold you meet. If you were to max out all of these, you could earn a total of 8,700 bonus miles. When I have more in purchases to make than the cap on my preferred airline, I’ll usually shop through a family member’s account to max out the promo for them as well.

Quick Thoughts
The Alaska portal offer has easy math as you’ll earn an effective 2x bonus miles per dollar for each of the spending thresholds if spending that exact amount. That’s not the most generous offer ever, but it could make sense focusing on this portal if the rates on the retailers you want to shop at are already high through the portal.
Another benefit of the Alaska portal (and the United portal too for that matter) is that they have an in-store card-linked program. Those purchases count towards the spending requirements for these types of promo, so it’s nice that you aren’t limited to only earning on online purchases.
The American Airlines portal promo is more generous, giving 2.5x for the first two tiers and 2.86x for the third tier when spending at those exact levels. Note that you don’t earn a corresponding number of Loyalty Points for the bonus miles from this promo, although you do earn a corresponding number of Loyalty Points based on the regular earnings through the portal. For example, if you spend $700 at a retailer where the rate is 4x, you’ll earn 2,800 miles based on that 4x rate as well as 2,800 Loyalty Points. You’ll then earn 2,000 bonus miles from this promotion.

Stephen, I used to score all these with Visa Giftcards on Giftcards.com. That stopped working some time ago. Do you know a strategy similar to that? I tried Quill, it didn’t work either
Not with the ease of Giftcards.com. The United and Alaska shopping portals both have card-linked in-store offers. You can sometimes stack those with Amex Offers to give you additional options beyond just online shopping and these can sometimes make sense for third party gift card resellers, but on the Visa/Mastercard gift card side of things, I’m not aware of anything that’ll definitely work.
