Hertz is out with a limited-time promotion offering a free day when booking a rental of two or more days. The free day is taken into account in the cost of your rental, rather than it being a free rental day redeemable at another time, plus it’s only valid on rentals from Hertz locations in participating neighborhood locations.

Quick Thoughts

Hertz is advertising this as a free rental day which, to be fair, it is. However, if you’re used to promotions from other car rental companies like National that sometimes offer free rental days, it’s important to be aware that the free rental day comes in the form of an instant discount when booking your rental of two or more days rather than you getting a free rental certificate that can be used at a future date.

This offer is also only valid at participating neighborhood locations, so if you’re looking to pick up a Hertz rental car at an airport, it seems like you’ll be out of luck. Depending on the cost of a rental, it could potentially be worth grabbing an Uber or Lyft ride to a participating location from an airport; whether it’s worth the extra hassle for the savings is another matter.

Click through from a shopping portal to ensure you earn rewards on the reservation – here are the current rates. If you have the Capital One Shopping browser extension installed, it’s worth checking the home page of the portal on desktop – as well as your email – to see if you’re targeted for a higher rate. For example, right now I’m targeted for an offer giving 15% cashback which is significantly higher than the rate available via any other shopping portal.

The trade off is you *might* go to jail. But it’s a sacrifice Hertz is willing to make (Shrek reference).

Agreed. Stay away from Hertz. They paid $168 million in fines in late 2022 yet it still goes on. One woman was in jail for 40 days late last year, falsely imprisoned, shortly after giving birth.
