Cardless Pelicans card: uncapped 4% back on gas and dining with no annual fee

1

Cardless made a splash last year as a new and less traditional credit card issuer, offering sports team-branded cards with interesting welcome bonuses or bonus categories. We previously reported on the Manchester United card, the Cleveland Cavaliers card, and the Miami Marlins card. The latest addition to the Cardless portfolio of cards is the New Orleans Pelicans card and it just may be worth adding to your wallet if you would appreciate uncapped 4% back at gas stations.

Quick Thoughts

I know that the Costco Anywhere Visa has long been loved for its 4% back on gas, though that bonus category is limited to $7,000 in spend per year. For a time, the Ducks Unlimited card was the darling of lesser-known cards offering uncapped 5% back at gas stations until they ended that. At this point, the New Orleans Pelicans card stands among the best uncapped cash back options for gas station spend on the market (See our Best Category Bonuses page for other options including many transferable currencies that you may value more highly and/or cards with varying caps/limitations).

While that certainly could be attractive to road warriors who fill up frequently, it could also be interesting for other things one can buy at gas stations. For instance, a couple of years ago, when my second son was born, I wrote about funding a 529 via Gift of College Gift Cards purchased at a regional gas station chain that has locations in parts of the Northeast (See: A bundle of points with our bundle of joy: Nearly 200K points earned in the first month of life). While that specific play is highly region-specific, the fact is that there are situations where a 4% gas station card could be handy, though I have no idea as to Cardless’s sensitivity in that regard.

Four percent back on dining is also a solid return on a cash back card with no annual fee. Overall, it is pleasantly surprising to see Cardless offer competitive cards disguised by sports team branding. While this card could obviously be interesting for a New Orleans Pelicans fan, the truth is that regardless of the branding it could be useful for a much wider audience, too.

Is this card worth a 5/24 slot? Probably not, though on the flip side a $300 welcome bonus with useful 4% categories might be worth it for someone primarily interested in cash back. Otherwise, this is certainly a respectable offer given the low spending requirement for those over 5/24.

What a great card, no annual fee, 4% back in uncapped amounts in two widely used categories, a $300 sub. This + the new SUB for BCP ($350 and no annual fee first year) and you have a 2 card punch that beats AMEX gold for most people for the first 2 years or so without silly monthly credits at limited locations to match an annual fee.

You even get the same amex offers for the most part with the BCP and 6% back grocery if you use this. Clearly a deal.
