Chase: no more self-referrals

5

Chase has added terms to some referral links indicating that you are not eligible for a referral bonus if you use your own referral URL to apply for another card. While the language doesn’t appear on all referral links, its appearance on some is a good indication that self-referral is a bad idea.

Last year, Amex unexpectedly clawed back points from people who had used their own referral links to open new accounts during. Chase appears to be taking a more pragmatic approach in adding terms to the offers as a warning first. Hopefully they will not follow the Amex example of clawing back retroactively.

Personally, I’ve never bothered with this as it didn’t seem worth risking all of my Chase accounts over one or two referral bonuses. I’d recommend avoiding this behavior even in those situations where terms do not yet expressly forbid it.

I’m trying to refer my wife to a World of Hyatt card but I don’t have that card, do I need the World of Hyatt first in order for me to refer my wife? Thanks Nick!!!
