American Airlines is offering some great deals from Chicago to Cancun in basic economy (which still includes both a carry-on and personal item and may include a checked bag if you have one of several American Airlines credit cards Correction: A free checked bag is not included on flights to/from Mexico) from just $169 round trip on select dates in December, January, and February.
The Deal
- Cheap American Airlines fares from Chicago to Cancun, with flights from $169 round trip on select dates from December through February (basic economy, which includes a full-size carry-on as well as a personal item)
- Find dates with Google Flights
Quick Thoughts
This sale is pretty good if you are OK without a seat assignment and boarding last. Several of the American Airlines credit cards come with a free checked bag and priority boarding, so you can get most of the benefits of full economy at the basic economy price.
Availability isn’t amazing, but it’s not bad. The price is certainly right if you’re looking to escape the winter for a few days. Here’s a look at January and February via Google Flights.
You may even be able to save a few bucks more via Skyscanner or Momondo, though the slim savings might not make it worth going with a lesser-known entity.
H/T: Slickdeals
Are you sure the checked bag benefit works on flights to Mexico? I don’t think it does on the Aviator.
Whoops — guess I should have reviewed our free checked bags via credit card guide before I posted:

While the free checked bag benefit applies to several Latin American countries, you’re right that it does *not* on flights to Mexico. I’ve update the post – thanks!
