Quick Thoughts
This sale is a little strange because it’s not entirely clear to me what level of discount you’ll receive. The email my wife and I both received stated that the discount is up to 40%. However, when clicking through to the promotion it states that we could save up to 50%. The discount being displayed for us is 45% if buying 8,000-17,000 points and 50% if buying 18,000+ points. A 45% discount means you’d be buying points for 0.57cpp, while a 50% discounts reduces that to 0.52cpp which is a superb deal for Choice points. Our Reasonable Redemption Value for Choice is 0.67cpp, so if you were to buy their points for 0.57cpp or 0.52cpp, it wouldn’t be hard to get better value than that when redeeming the points.
I’m not sure everyone is eligible for a discount that high though. The top of the page states that this is an exclusive offer for cardholders and that to get the increased discount you have to pay with your Choice credit card. The thing is, neither my wife nor I are Choice cardholders and so we shouldn’t be seeing that increased offer. That said, we did once have a Choice credit card and so I suspect somewhere in Choice’s system there’s something indicating that we’re still cardholders. I’d assumed that if we bought points without paying with a Choice credit card that we’d only get a 40% discount. The thing is, when clicking through to the payment page and entering my non-Choice credit card details, it’s not reducing the discount. That suggests we could buy points at the higher discount of 50% if we wanted.
Be sure to check the pricing when buying points yourself to ensure you’re paying what you expect. If it’s showing that you’ll get a higher discount too, it’d be worth taking a screenshot just in case Choice/Points.com subsequently charge you a higher amount for not paying with a Choice credit card. I doubt that would happen, but it’s worth having evidence of the quoted price when you click to pay in the event of needing to dispute the amount charged.

I did the Blue Green timeshare thing for 3 night and 70k choice points earlier this year and I was looking to stay in NYC and deplete my balance. I bought 19,000 so I had enough for a two night stay. In totality the cost saved me about $136. The hotel I was put in for the timeshare was disgusting so I left after one night but for those who use it for an actual vacation value could be even more.
This is about the cheapest I’ve ever seen Choice points sold at. That said, I noticed a pretty significant devaluation at Choice this summer, with a lot of hotels (but not all) suddenly costing about a third more. You’ll see some discussion about this on Flyertalk. Take a look at what you might be interested in redeeming before buying your points.
Wait, Choice has a lifetime status? Says purchasing points does not count toward Lifetime Elite in the article, meaning there is a Lifetime status?
I don’t think there’s lifetime status on a regular basis. They have offered lifetime status at times, such as for military members https://frequentmiler.com/choice-hotels-giving-lifetime-gold-status-to-military-members-their-spouses-2500-bonus-points/
My guess is that points.com adds in that language automatically. Or perhaps Choice offers lifetime status for residents of other countries sometimes?
Just to follow up, I just bought the maximum 180,000 points for $927 using the WF Choice Select MC. They posted instantly, and clicking through Top Cash Back caused no issues this time.
Thanks to Bob below who tipped me off that the Select card was posting 10x points on these purchases!
What posting times are people seeing? I bought 20K and it posted instantly. Now I bought another 110K and stuck waiting.
Stephen, minor discrepancy, but how are you getting .52 cpp?
I’m getting the full 50% off, but it’s .23 cpp. e.g., 100,000 points runs $515, not $510..?
If you’re getting 0.23cpp, it sounds like you might be calculating it the wrong way round.
An easy way to calculate the cpp is to take the cost in pennies and divide by the number of points you’d be buying. In this case, you’d move the 515 two decimal places to the left to make 51,500, then divide that by 100,000. That’s gets you 0.515, or 0.52cpp when rounded up.
Apologies Stephen, those were my typos, meanwhile your rounding explains the difference I was wondering about.
So 0.515 it is. And that’s before Top cash back dot com’s current 2.52% reward, and the 10 choice points per dollar Bob mentions below on the annual fee Choice mastercard.
If one is fortunate enough to have that CC, and have TCB post, then I think the math looks like this when you buy 100,000 points:
$515 x .9748 = $502.02 (after TCB), for
100,000 + 5,150 choice points (with the extra from the cc),
502.02 / 105,150 = .47743, rounded up to 0.48 cpp.
That’s about the cheapest net cost I can recall choice points being available for, including the US Travel Association promos.
The Choice program in underrated by people in this hobby. I buy their points when they are half off. Choice has a number of airline transfer partners as well as dozens of great international redemptions that are often overlooked.
Julie, I agree that Choice is quite underrated!
Have you ever used the airline transfer partners? I haven’t looked closely, since none of them seemed like good values at first glance.
I haven’t used the airline transfer points yet. I agree that they don’t look great at first glance, but if you buy points at half off they are not too bad, especially Alaska miles. I would also consider SW airline miles as I don’t have very many at this time. I am saving my Choice points for international redemptions.
I believe the 50% discount is for cardmembers only when using their WF Choice cc. I would also like to point out the fact that purchasing points with these cards will earn either 5x or 10x depending which card you have. A totally underrated feature of these cards.
I am a cardholder fwiw and I got 50%
Bob, can you confirm that you earned 5x/10x on point purchases?
These are through points.com, and spending on the Choice card (which I also have) to buy points there isn’t bonused.
Yes I can confirm. The last time they offered this same promotion I bought some points and got a nice surprise when my statement closed. I had no idea points purchases were bonused myself. If you go to the WF CP page you can see that they clearly state point purchases are either 5x or 10 depending on which card you have. Thanks Bob, that’s very interesting. That’s been changed since I got the card in 2023. Makes the deal all that much more attractive.
You’re welcome!
Yes, very interesting because it essentially adds an additional discount to the purchase. For instance, I needed 68k points to make a hotel reservation the last time I purchased points but only needed to buy 65k because the points earned on the 65k purchase would have given me 3k. This only works if you are booking in advance and are confident the hotel will still be available when the earned points from the purchase post to your account.
Only show 40% for me
The site, for me, also notes 40%. However, when I use the slider to indicate the number of points I wish to purchase, it indicates a 50% discount.
Try again, not for me
