Delta has launched a new flash sale on award trips to the UK. The headline rates are excellent with flights to the UK from only 20,000 SkyMiles round trip, but taxes and fees make this a little less enticing.
The Deal
- Book award flights from the UK on Delta from 20,000 SkyMiles round trip.
- Direct link to offer.
Key Terms
- Must book flights by September 6, 2019 at 11:59pm ET.
Quick Thoughts
Miles-wise, this is a fantastic deal as it’s not often you can book award flights to Europe for 20,000 miles round trip, although with taxes and fees of ~$175 it’s not quite as much of a stellar deal as it initially appears.
The landing page for the offer lists some restrictive travel dates, but those aren’t correct. For example, it lists New York to London travel dates as January 29 to February 4, 2020, an incredibly small window of opportunity. In reality though, availability is wide open. For example, here’s availablity in January and February…
…while here’s availability in November 2019.
Flights as low as 20,000 miles are available from the west coast too. The offer page lists flights from Los Angeles to London as costing 22,000 miles, but that route is available for only 20,000 miles too.
This award sale ends on September 6, so you only have a couple of days to get in your reservations.
Before booking anything though, check the cash prices for flights as those might provide better value when taking into account the high taxes and fees on the award flights. For example, you can get direct round trip flights with Delta for less than $350 between New York and London. That means booking an award flight for 20,000 SkyMiles round trip would be getting you less than 1cpp of value once accounting for the taxes and fees.
One thing to note is that the paid flight listed above is Basic Economy whereas the award flights that I looked at are booked into Main Cabin.
[…] Hat tip to FM […]
The UK departure tax is the killer. I booked an open jaw SFO-LHR, CDG-SFO for 29,000 over Easter with only $85 in taxes. Same taxes as SFO-CDG round trip.
Hmm, any idea of it’s possible to upgrade after booking a Main Cabin itin for 20K points?
And OOF, this really doesn’t look like much of a deal at all, given the surprising availability of <$400/rt (all-in) non-stop fares SJC-LHR on BA 😮
