Delta Personal Credit Cards: Limited-time welcome for up to 100K SkyMiles

2

Along with the healthy, new Delta Business card offers that we posted earlier today, Amex has also increased the welcome offers on the suite of Delta personal cards. As per usual, the consumer cards each give you 10K SkyMiles less than the respective business cards, but also with half the minimum spend.

Like the business card versions, these have an expiry date of 4/2/25 and are probably better-suited for those who are not chasing Delta status and are more interested in redeemable miles.

Quick Thoughts

Delta SkyMiles aren’t the most valuable rewards currency on the market, but they are typically worth at least 1 cent each toward Delta flights, which means that these offers can be valued at ~$900-$1100+ in air travel. While any one of these offers probably won’t get you an international business class flight (unless you depart from outside the US and Canada), that’s no small potatoes for those who do fly Delta often.

That said, it’s worth noting what’s changed over the last year with these cards, especially if you’re looking to use them as a means to get Delta elite status or lounge access. Delta Reserve cards now earn 1 Medallion-Qualifying Dollar (MQD) for every $10 spent on the card, while the Platinum cards earn 1 MQD for every $20 spent on the card, severely hampering the ability to earn status through spend. There’s also significant new limitations to SkyClub access for the Delta Reserve as well; cardholders are now limited to 15 Sky Club “visit-days” per year, unless they spend $75K on the card within a calendar year.

I’m sure that there are many people who don’t care about airline elite status and for that crowd these new offers look pretty good if you want a Delta card or SkyMiles. I don’t think that I’d rather take one of these over a big transferable currency offer (like 90K on the Chase Ink Business Preferred, 200K on the Amex Business Gold card or 250K on the Amex Business Platinum card), but these offers certainly aren’t bad compared to the required spend.

Are these NLL?

Well, were you to click through on the links provided in this FM post, you would find at the top of OFFER TERMS

You may not be eligible to receive a welcome offer if you have or have had this Card the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card, the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card or previous versions of these Cards. You also may not be eligible to receive a welcome offer based on various factors, such as your history with credit card balance transfers, your history as an American Express Card Member, the number of credit cards that you have opened and closed and other factors. If you are not eligible for a welcome offer, we will notify you prior to processing your application so you have the option to withdraw your application.

On the other hand, in the offer that showed up via email today to P2, I could see no such language prior to what were otherwise the same offer terms although were one to click through further, perhaps they would materialize somewhere; this exercise is left to the reader, as the answer is immaterial to the main points, which are:

  1. Even if one has a NLL offer, one might still not get the card, as all over this nation there are people languishing in Pop-up Jail for reasons that are many and obscure.
  2. It is not impossible to have had the card before and to secure the offer again, even under an application with lifetime language.
  3. There is no cost to applying for an Amex card (especially if you have one already), since there is no credit report pull (no need to unfreeze a credit report), Amex will tell you whether you are eligible for the SUB or not, and if they don’t tell you that you are ineligible for the SUB, then if you do go ahead and apply and are approved — regardless of what your circumstances are, or what you thing the rules are — you will receive the SUB if you make your spend in the time allocated and do not do anything foolish like gift cards, or weird returns.
