Discover has announced which categories will earn 5% cashback for each quarter in 2019. They’re largely the same as 2018, with a couple of notable differences.
As the image above shows, the 2019 Discover cashback bonus categories will be as follows:
- January 1 – March 31: Grocery stores (excludes Walmart and Target)
- April 1 – June 30: Gas stations, Uber & Lyft
- July 1 – September 30: Restaurants
- October 1 – December 31: Amazon
Discover’s quarterly categories in 2018 were similar, although gas stations were in Q1 and grocery stores were Q2.
On the positive side, Uber and Lyft have been included as part of Q2’s category. On the negative side, wholesale clubs were included in both Q1 and Q4 for 2018, but they’re not due to make an appearance at all in 2019.
It’s nice that Discover has announced the categories so far ahead of time, but the list sadly isn’t too exciting. More and more cards are offering excellent rewards year-round in several of these categories, so for many people it’ll make more sense to use those cards than trying to remember which category earns 5% cashback each quarter.
