12% cashback on reservations for paid stays with IHG is almost as good as it gets, with publicly available rates only going higher than that very briefly a couple of times over the last 15 months.

It might be possible to get an even better rate than that though. That’s because if you have the Capital One Shopping browser extension installed and you do a dummy booking, you might get a targeted offer for IHG. I’ve done this several times over the past 6 months or so and have gotten rates ranging from 16% to 24% cashback. Most recently, I’ve been getting the 16% rate and have taken advantage of that for a couple of upcoming bookings with IHG.

Note that IHG doesn’t always email you about these increased rates. Sometimes you’ll get a push notification if you have the Capital One Shopping app installed on your phone, but other times it’ll appear on the home page of the Capital One Shopping website or under Filters > Merchants. Another time I got a push notification on my phone for the 16% rate, but it wasn’t displaying the 16% rate for IHG. However, when searching for Hilton in the app it displayed the IHG 16% rate as a similar offer.

However, some might regard 12% in the hand as being worth 16% in the bush given there’s no guarantee that Capital One Shopping will send you a targeted offer before the 12% rates end with Swagbucks, Upromise and InboxDollars, plus the paid rate for your stay could increase while you’re waiting for that targeted offer.
