Etihad has sent out an email to members offering double Etihad Guest miles when you fly with American Airlines from now until September 2021. I’m not entirely sure whether this may be targeted — the email doesn’t indicate that it is a targeted offer, but neither do I see it advertised on Etihad’s site. This could be a pretty good deal if you’re not chasing American Airlines elite status given some useful Etihad Guest sweet spots.

The Deal

  • Etihad Guest is emailing an offer to earn double Etihad Guest miles with American Airlines bookings from now until September 2021

Key Terms

  • It is unclear whether the offer is targeted
  • It is unclear whether “till September 2021” means until September begins or ends
  • American Airlines flights do not earn Etihad Tier Miles, so they won’t help you earn Etihad elite status

Quick Thoughts

This seems like it is probably a decent promotion for anyone who isn’t chasing American Airlines elite status this year. Here is the chart for earning Etihad Guest miles on American Airlines flights:

Assuming you’ll earn double those rates, you’d be earning 200% mileage flown on some economy class bookings and as much as 500% mileage flown on the most expensive tickets. More realistically, discounted business class fares should earn 300% of mileage flown. That might not be a bad deal if you value Etihad Guest miles. They certainly have some sweet spots that could make them worth collecting.

Of course, given that American has made it quite easy to requalify or do a status challenge through Hyatt, I imagine that many American Airlines travelers will be crediting to American (or perhaps to Alaska). But this could make Etihad a competitive choice. Do note that you won’t earn credit toward elite status with Etihad.

It’s a little odd that I can’t find any mention of this promotion on the Etihad site. There is a “Book Now” button in the email that just takes you to aa.com. I believe that any flights operated by American should qualify – the email specifically notes exploring the USA’s wonders, so it is clearly aimed at those traveling within the United States. If I click on the Etihad Guest picture, it takes me to a link that says “americanairlines_doublemiles_17_jul21” in the URL (here it is), but I’m not seeing any mention of the double miles on the Etihad site itself. I assume this is likely a public offer, but it is very light on terms, so the old adage your mileage may vary certainly applies.
