Marriott and SPG came out with their fourth quarter promotions last week, and both look pretty good: with Marriott, you can earn a free night after just two paid stays, and with Starwood you can earn 1,000 bonus points per night and 10,000 additional points with 25 paid nights during the promotional period.

Quick Thoughts
This promotion looks like a winner if you have paid stays coming up during the promotional period. Just two stays will earn you a free night at a Category 1-5 hotel. The downside is that the free night certificate you earn is only valid for 6 months, limiting its utility. Still, it’s probably not hard to find a use for a free night — whether as a stop along the way on a road trip or an airport overnight or as an add-on night to a vacation. If you hold off on making that second paid stay until near the end of the promotional period, your free night will even be valid into early summer 2018. The promotion’s wording implies that there will additionally be an opportunity to earn bonus points on additional paid stays that will be “unlocked” after you earn your free night. Don’t forget to register now as registration ends more than 6 weeks before the end of the promotion — you don’t want to suddenly find that you need two unexpected paid nights near the end of the promotion and be unable to register.

Quick Thoughts
This promotion seems a bit less generous than the Marriott promotion, but will still be an exciting promo for those who have short paid SPG stays planned during the promotional period. This promotion stacks with any current targeted promotions, and some people have received promotions for even more bonus points or double elite stay/night credit (See: Did you get an SPG bonus offer?). If I do go after SPG Platinum this quarter, I’ll certainly be happy to earn some bonus points while doing so.

Cat. 1>5 is a nonstarter. Meh.
Fun Fact: There are nine Marriotts in Japan, zero of which are eligible to use the free Cat 1-5 night on.
Does anyone feel the Marriott promo is worth mattress running for? Marriott tends not to have rock bottom brand pricing. And the cert lasts only 6 months.
I wonder though. In times past, Marriott has extended 6 month certs to a year, as a courtesy, when asked. Curious to know if anyone’s tried that for this promo.
