Fuel reward schemes are becoming increasingly popular – Shell Fuel Rewards, BP Driver Rewards, Exxon Speedpass and more.
Marathon is getting in on the act and has partnered with MakeItCount. This fuel scheme has an interesting feature – you can earn miles with Southwest Rapid Rewards or La Quinta Returns points.
To start earning miles or points, you need to sign up with MakeItCount. When filling up your gas tank at Marathon, you just need to enter 11 and then your phone number. You can also earn miles or points when making purchases in store at a Marathon gas station.
Once your account’s set up, you can choose whether to earn Rapid Rewards points or La Quinta Rewards points. You’ll earn 1 Rapid Reward point or 2 La Quinta Returns points per dollar spent gallon of fuel purchased. The nice thing is that you can change your earning preference at any time. When signing up, don’t forget to link your Southwest or La Quinta account to ensure you earn points.
Be aware that when signing up:
You authorize Drop Tank and all third-party organizations engaged by Drop Tank to deliver promotional and advertising messages to your enrolled email address. In addition, by providing your mobile phone number at the time of enrollment in the MakeItCount program you also authorize Drop Tank and all third-party organizations engaged by Drop Tank to deliver autodialed transactional messages to your enrolled mobile phone number.
Thankfully you can easily update the Preferences section to turn off all marketing messages:
When signing up for MakeItCount, you’ll get 20c off per gallon on your first fill up. You can also earn bonus miles / points on certain purchases found in the My Offers section:
If you ever find yourself filling up at Marathon, this scheme’s worth signing up for to earn a few bonus miles / points.

Hi Stephen – Great blog post. I just wanted to let you know that the earn offer is actually “earn 1 Rapid Rewards point or 2 La Quinta Returns points per gallon of fuel purchased”, not per dollar spent. See the makeitcount partner page: https://makeitcount.com/ourpartners
Just wanted to let you know so you could update your post.
Thank you – I’ve updated that now 🙂

Are the earned SW points Companion Pass eligible?
The terms didn’t seem to state one way or the other, but I’d expect for them to not count towards the CP. If they do, then that’s a bonus.
Hi Cliff – The Southwest points ARE Companion Pass eligible 🙂
stephen. its probably a good idea to actually note that Marathon is all east coast. this doesnt apply to anyone in the west.
Use a dummy number, problem solved
