Quick Thoughts
Southwest seems to run this kind of promotion 2-3 times a year and it has the potential to be valuable for the right person who’ll be traveling with a companion this fall.
It’s worth registering for the promotion if you’ll be booking any flights with Southwest in the next few days for travel through the end of August, even if you don’t necessarily anticipate being able to utilize the Companion Pass this fall.

I have a companion pass valid in August from a similar promotion earlier this year. Within the qualifying time period, I plan to book an Aug roundtrip, and to bring a companion on that flight.
Would using the companion pass on that roundtrip disqualify me from satisfying this promotion for another promotional companion pass later?
Terms say, “Companion Pass, charter flights, group travel, Basic fares, and Southwest Vacations® packages do not qualify as one-way or round trip flights for this promotion.” Does that mean my fully paid flight doesn’t qualify if I bring a companion on it, or just the free flight of the companion wouldn’t qualify? Any insight? Thanks!
Actually just called Southwest, and the rep said bringing a companion on my flight would not disqualify it from meeting the terms of the current promotion.
Yep, that’s right. The exclusion regarding the Companion Pass refers to the fact that the person flying with you wouldn’t be earning an eligible flight for the promo of they’re flying as the free companion.
So the wife and I are flying out on 8/23. We are both returning 9/3. I realize the Sept return legs won’t count — but since I would be buying 2 seats — would that count as 2 one ways?
Unfortunately not – it would count as one one-way for each of you rather than two one-ways for one of you.
When will I have access to book with the companion pass? I (re)booked yesterday for a flight in July. I’d like to use it for an October flight with a friend, which I was hoping to book right away in case it gets more expensive.
I’m not sure how soon after the end of the promotion it posts the Companion Pass. However, you can book your ticket now and then add your companion later on once you have it – you don’t need to wait to book your ticket until you have it. Provided there’s still a seat available on the flight, you’ll be able to add them.
Thank you!
Thanks! Follow up question – are there a limited number of seats for companion passes?
I.e., could my companion book a fully refundable rate now, and then cancel it when my companion passes is available. That would ensure there’s a seat available. But if there’s a limited number of seats for companions, then there still may not be actual availability.
No, there’s no limit on companions – provided there’s a seat, you can add them. I’m not sure how quickly cancelled seats go back into inventory, so if they booked a refundable ticket now and then cancel once you have the pass, I don’t know if it’ll immediately become available. It’s not necessarily a bad idea though. Just make sure the refundable fare offers an actual refund rather than just Southwest credit as that expires now (it didn’t in the past).
Are you eligible for the promotion if you use points to book the qualifying flight?
Yes
Thank you!
will the same 3 changes to your companion rules still apply, or does it limit you to one companion for the whole of the Flying window in Sep-Nov?
If I have a traditional companion pass and I register for this promo, can I have 2 companions for this promotion?
I’m afraid not
[…] TX — The delicate balance between gig work and human dignity teetered wildly this week as Southwest Airlines’ three-day Companion Pass promotion let Rapid Rewards members earn a plus-one ticket with just a single round trip, June 24–27, 2025. […]
So have nothing planned that would fit the Travel Period, but we could definitely take advantage of the CP period. Thinking a mileage run may be worth it.
Would a short, round-trip the same day qualify? I am not seeing any verbiage to the contrary.
Yes, that’s definitely eligible
That’s new language that says “Not valid on Basic fares,” so be careful. I’m not sure if that means the qualifying flight has to be WGA+, or also the flight with companion needs to be WGA+ as well.
Does this mean any flight booked, other than basic fare qualifies?
Other than award flights, yes. Must be booked after registration.
Okay, so to clarify. In order to qualify for the promotion you must book a WGA+, anytime or business select flight and when you redeem the promotion you must book a WGA+, anytime, business select, flight as well? So as long as you book anything but basic fare you’d qualify?
Someone posted today that the offer has been clarified to read that “Basic fares do not count as a qualifying flight,” which suggests you can book anything you want while using the CP, just not for earning it.
Would it count if you left by Aug 31st but returned in September?
No, your second flight has to depart by August 31.
Does it matter if you pay for a new reservation with funds from a reservation that I just cancelled? It’s a $10 increase but the companion pass makes it worthwhile.
Yes, that’s fine – provided you book by 6/27 and fly by 8/31.
Too bad it looks like you can’t combine the Chase $50 credit that’s going around for CSP/CIP with this….
