Update: If you’re willing to pay a bit more in taxes, you can find flights to London from 16,000 miles round trip in the main cabin or 36K round trip in Comfort+ (from as far as Los Angeles. (H/T: Will Run for Miles)

Delta is offering a flash sale on flights to/from Europe, with prices starting at 22,000 SkyMiles + $57.75 round trip in the main cabin or 42,000 miles round trip in Comfort+. While we often see fare sales for travel during the January-to-March travel period, this is still a solid price in terms of an award ticket, especially considering that many options are direct and there are decent deals out of many smaller market US cities to a number of European destinations as well. If you’re thinking about Europe during winter or early spring, this is a good opportunity to use up some SkyMiles.

The Deal

  • Delta is offering a flash sale to Europe from many cities in the US, with prices starting at 22K SkyMiles round trip in the main cabin or 42K miles round trip in Comfort+. We’re seeing many smaller markets in the US pricing as low as 30K miles round trip, so it’s worth taking a look.

Key Terms

  • Travel January to March, 2020
  • Sale could end at any time

Quick Thoughts

There are many cities with cheaper-than-normal pricing. Most programs charge around 30K miles each way to and from Europe. Given the relatively inexpensive prices for economy class travel from east coast hubs, I don’t usually find economy class travel to and from Europe to be worth the mileage for an award ticket. However, getting there for 22K miles round trip would change my perspective some. Good prices are widespread in this flash sale. For example, here’s New York to Zurich in January.

That compares favorably to cash fares during the same time period, with Google Flights showing paid fares at $451 during the same period.

At almost 1.8c per SkyMile, that’s a pretty good value. Some may prefer Comfort+, which also seems reasonable to me at 42K round trip.

It gets even better if you’re looking to travel to London and don’t mind paying a bit more in fees. Here is Los Angeles to London for 16,000 miles and $181.55 round trip.

The nice thing with this flash sale is that we’re seeing competitive pricing even from smaller markets that don’t ordinarily have fares as inexpensive as the east coast. For instance, here is Fargo to Madrid for 30K miles and $75 round trip.

Similar deals can be found from many cities around the country to Zurich, Madrid, Munich, and Stuttgart. I even saw deals on itineraries that include some partner metal. Here’s Albany, NY to Budapest for 30K miles round trip.

Overall, this looks like a solid deal. While the travel period if low season for Europe, this could nonetheless be a nice way to get solid value out of your SkyMiles if you were contemplating a winter trip.
