Hertz is emailing out a targeted promotion that’s offering a $50 discount on hotel bookings when renting a midsize or larger car for 3+ days. The hotel discount isn’t very flexible, but might be worth exploring for some as it can provide larger discounts than just the $50.

Quick Thoughts
The first thing to note is that this isn’t a $50 Hotels.com gift card. Instead, it’s a $50 discount on a hotel reservation made at Hertz Plus Hotels.
Hertz Plus Hotels appears to be a white labeled version of the Travel Savings Card hotel booking system. When exploring Travel Savings Card earlier this year, I found that there were some instances where value could be gained when booking hotels using one of their gift cards.
This offer has a few downsides. First of all, you’re limited to one $50 discount, so you can’t stack multiple $50 codes. Secondly, the credit code expires at the end of April next year. A third factor to consider is that I’m assuming you won’t earn Hertz points or airline miles when choosing this rate.
That said, there’s the potential for this discount to save you money, especially if you don’t care about status benefits, elite night credits, points, etc. I’m in the Chicago area at the moment and recently stayed at the Kimpton: The Gray hotel. If booking the cheapest room there for tonight, the cost directly with IHG would be $226.62:
By comparison, the demo site for Hertz Plus Hotels lists the price as $183 after the $50 discount has been subtracted.
That’s not bad, but it gets even better. When clicking on the ‘Select Room’ button, it expands with several other rates. The cheapest of those comes to a total of $147.47 with tax.
That’s a saving of 35% compared to the rate when booking directly with IHG. It means you wouldn’t receive any elite benefits (like the $10 Raid The Bar credit) or points, but saving more than $80 would likely be worth it. Especially if you ended up getting a $30 food & beverage credit from using their secret password when checking in, not to mention their 5-6pm social hour with free wine.
As you might note from the screenshot above, this cheaper rate would only use up $22 of your $50 hotel credit. That’d therefore leave you with $28 towards a future reservation. Edit: As Colin pointed out in the comments below, the terms state that any leftover amount isn’t carried over.
This deal isn’t for everybody, if for no other reason than it’s a targeted offer. If you are targeted though and have a need for a one night hotel stay before April 2019, this might help snag you a good deal.
Your example would not leave you with $28 toward a future reservation.
From the T&Cs you included in your post:
Reward must be redeemed in one (1) transaction and no credit or refund will be provided for any unused portion of the Reward.
That’s a good point – I’ll update the post.
The deal says it’s not usable with any other rate, blah blah blah. It sure sucks that you have to pay rack rate to get any sort of deals. I miss the silent AmEx 5% OPEN rebate. So, I book with my corporate rate, and I can’t double dip with anything else. I guess it’s good that I still get 5x AmEx “travel points”.
Got the email – is this stackable with the 550 Hertz points bonus offer we recently got?
I got one for a $50 gc
