Quick Thoughts

Spending $279 to earn 70,000 Choice Privileges points is like buying them for just under 0.4 cents per point which is an excellent price for Choice points. If you were already interested in a three night stay at one of the following destinations, you’re effectively getting that stay for less than $100, with the 70,000 points being a very large cherry on top:

  • Las Vegas, NV
  • Myrtle Beach, SC
  • New Orleans, LA
  • Orlando, FL
  • Ozark Mountains, MO
  • Smoky Mountains, TN
  • Wisconsin Dells, WI

My wife and I attended a timeshare presentation with Wyndham back in 2018, while Nick and his wife attended a Choice/Bluegreen Vacations timeshare presentation a couple of years ago. Both of us had a fairly similar experience – the presentations took a little longer than the two hours they were supposedly due to take, but ultimately we both got out of there with our rewards without signing up for a timeshare. That latter point is very important though – buying a timeshare at one of these presentations represents very poor value, so you should only go into this if you know for sure that you won’t be easily cajoled/pressured into signing on the dotted line before you leave.

Stephen:
I contemplated attending a Wyndham Timeshare Presentation. $279 and 60,000 Wyndham points. FYI I have Wyndham diamond status through my Business Earner CC. Only problem the 60,000 Wyndham Points are Wyndham Vacation Points completely separate from Wyndham Hotel points. You can only use the 60,000 Wyndham Vacation Points if you sign on the dotted line and became an owner. Two different separate programs.
Is the same with the Choice program?

Steve T

Stephen:

I am correct. I’ve checked and double checked and even visited the Wyndham timeshare office in NYC. These are two separate programs.

Once you become an owner and receive the Wyndham vacation points there is a mechanism to convert the Wyndham Vacation points to the Wyndham Rewards (Hotel program). However the conversion is not a good deal. Wyndham Vacation points convert at a 40% rate to Wyndham Hotel points plus a $99 processing fee. Thus 60,000 Wyndham Vacation points would convert to 24,000 Wyndham Hotel points plus $99.

If you still doubt me, go to the blogs of Wyndham Timeshare owners and enter Converting Wyndham Vacation Points to Wyndham Hotel points. You will see I am correct.

Wyndham is not the most honorable when it comes to Timeshares and Timeshare presentations. Turns out I’ve booked the Club Wyndham in NYC using Hotel Points (They open it up to allow you to book a room using cash or hotel points during slow periods of the year when there occupancy rate of actual owners is low). During the stay, knowing you are not an owner they can be very aggressive in trying to tempt you to attend a presentation. It was then I found out (by visiting the actual timeshare office) that Wyndham Vacation points are not the same as hotel points
60,000 hotel points are good for four free nights at many properties. 24,000 points (the conversion rate) is one free night with a $99 charge assuming you sign on the dotted line and become an owner!
The offer depends on the salesperson who is trying to get you to attend a presentation. They keep on upping the offer to get you to attend. Kind of like buying a new or used car from a dealer.
