Hotels.com Amex Offer: Earn 10x Membership Rewards points on prepaid hotels

0

There is a new Hotels.com Amex Offer out today, offering 10 Membership Rewards points per dollar on prepaid hotel bookings. Enrollment is required before booking, and the 10x earnings are limited to a maximum of 10,000 bonus points.

The Deal

  • Earn 10 additional Membership Rewards® points for each dollar spent on qualifying prepaid hotel purchases.

Terms and Conditions

  • Offer valid for pre-paid hotel purchases made online through the hotels.com/amexbusiness link using the pre-paid option at checkout (“pay now”) only.
  • Excludes “pay at property” purchases and purchases made over the phone.
  • Excludes all other purchases not made at hotels.com/amexbusiness link using the pre-paid option at checkout.
  • Use of third party cashback offers, promotion codes, coupons, or browser extensions will invalidate this offer.
  • Excludes gift cards, groups & meetings, vacation rentals/packages, and car rentals.
  • Eligible Card Members will earn 10 additional Membership Rewards points for each dollar spent, up to 10,000 points, on qualifying purchases on their eligible Card.
Unfortunately, earning 10x points requires using Amex’s hotels.com site, which keeps you from double dipping with a shopping portal.

Quick Thoughts

Back in the day, we used to see Amex Offers for Hotels.com that gave 20% back when buying their gift cards, plus there were sometimes sales elsewhere giving 15%-20% off their gift cards. Those deals are few and far between nowadays, plus earnings on stays were slashed from 10% to a miserly 2% a few years ago.

Given that, earning 10x Membership Rewards points at Hotels.com is a fairly good promotion if that’s your hotel booking site of choice, especially since this Amex Offer is valid on up to $1,000 in spend. We value Membership Rewards at 1.5 cents each, so you could look at it as 15% back, or 11% if you prefer to cash out your points with the Schwab Platinum card.

A big downside of this offer is that it states you have to book at hotels.com/amexbusiness.

It could be better to focus on the shopping portal regardless. For example, Rakuten was recently offering 10x on purchases on Hotels.com, while Capital One Offers recently gave those targeted 10,000 Capital Miles after only $325 in spend. Either of those would probably be preferable to being confined to booking prepaid hotels through the Amex link.

If you do use this offer, it’s important to book a prepaid rate. If you choose to pay at the hotel, the Amex Offer won’t trigger because the payment won’t be made by Hotels.com. It’s worth noting that “prepaid” doesn’t necessarily mean “non-refundable”. There are almost always prepaid rates that’ll trigger the Amex Offer, but which can be cancelled for a full refund if plans change.
