A couple of times per year, Hy-Vee – a decently-sized grocery chain in the Midwest – runs a deal on Visa and Mastercard gift cards.

In years gone by the deal was extremely lucrative, providing an opportunity for people to make almost $25 profit for each card they bought. That sadly doesn’t seem to be the case anymore, but it is still a profitable deal that can hopefully be scaled fairly easily.

Quick Thoughts

This offer states that you get $10 off when buying $150+ Visa or Mastercard gift cards. Up until a year ago though, it was significantly better than that. What Hy-Vee actually did was give you $10 off for every $150 you spent on those cards, meaning you’d get $30 off when buying a $500 card. If your store let you buy three cards in a single transaction, that got you $100 off while paying less than $20 in purchase fees.

Unfortunately in November 2023 they seemed to belatedly realize how costly that approach was, so they hard-coded their system to only give one $10 discount per transactions. I’m assuming that’s still the case, but it might be worth testing out if you have a Hy-Vee store near you in case it’s reverted back to its former glorious self.

Even if you do only get $10 off per transaction, that still makes this a profitable deal seeing as the purchase fee will be less than $10. There’s no limits listed either, so you can hopefully buy as many as you like this week, or until the cashier(s) get a little nervous about how many you’re buying in separate transactions and cut you off.

Yeah, this time it’s $10 per transaction, not card. This was for MC.
