Frequent Miler's latest team challenge, Million Mile Madness, is happening now! Follow us as Greg, Nick, and Stephen compete to earn 1 Million SAS miles by flying 15 airlines before November 23rd. Who will complete the challenge with the most Speed, Affordability, and Style?
IHG Business Rewards is offering double points through the end of the year which means that it’s possible to earn a total of 6 points per dollar in addition to the points that the person staying will earn as standard. That has the potential to be a great deal, but it won’t help if you’re only wanting to book for yourself.
The Deal
- Earn double points when booking hotel stays, meetings or events through IHG Business Rewards.
- Direct link to registration.
Key Terms
- To be eligible for the IHG Business Rewards 2X Points offer (“Offer”), a person must be an IHG Business Rewards member, which includes acceptance of the IHG Business Rewards Program Terms and Conditions, and the member must have registered for the Offer.
- By clicking “register now” in connection with the promotional materials for the Offer, a member is registering for the Offer and agreeing to these Terms and Conditions.
- Once an IHG Business Rewards member has registered for the Offer, the member can earn double the IHG One Rewards points on Qualifying Spend for all stays, meetings, and/or events that are booked during the period from September 8, 2024, through December 31, 2024 (“Booking Period”) and completed during the period from September 8, 2024, through June 30, 2025 (“Offer Period”).
- Additional details on Qualifying Spend are provided below. The time needed for awarding points can vary with each promotional offer, so please allow up to 6 weeks for any earned bonus points to be posted to the recipient’s account.
- For this Offer, earning “2X” or “2X points” or “double points” on stays or events booked and completed within the applicable periods as set forth above means the total number of regular “base points” and promotional “bonus points” combined will equal two (2) times the base IHG One Rewards points the member would normally receive just for being an IHG Business Rewards member. Therefore, under the Offer, a member can earn three (3) base points for every $1 USD of Qualifying Spend and an additional three (3) bonus points for every $1 USD of Qualifying Spend, for a total of six (6) points for each $1 USD. The first three (3) base points earned are considered Elite Qualifying Points that count towards IHG One Rewards Elite status. The additional three (3) bonus points awarded as part of the Offer are Non-Elite Qualifying Points under the IHG One Rewards program.
- Points awarded under this Offer are based on Qualifying Spend within the Offer Period only.
- There is no limit on the number of stays, meetings, or events that may be booked under the Offer, but a maximum of 120,000 total points (which is the amount that would be awarded for $20,000 in Qualifying Spend) can be earned on any one qualifying stay, meeting, and/or event covered by this Offer, including all guest room bookings and other Qualifying Spend linked to such stay, meeting, and/or event.
Quick Thoughts
IHG Business Rewards is a program run for business travel planners where you normally earn 3 points per dollar when booking hotel stays for other people, or for events and/or meetings. This promotion is doubling those points, so you’ll earn 6 IHG One Rewards points per dollar spent which is a nice bonus seeing as it’s in addition to the points earned by the people actually staying at IHG properties when booking stays rather than meetings or events.
I imagine quite a few Frequent Miler readers will have registered for IHG Business Rewards at the end of last year when it emerged that IHG members would be able to transfer points for free to other members if they either have Diamond elite status or if they’re an IHG Business Rewards member.
I also imagine though that many people don’t know about the intricacies of how IHG Business Rewards works – I didn’t until doing some further research for this post. Although the points earned by the IHG Business Rewards member are in addition to the points earned by the person staying at the hotel that they booked, that can’t be the same person. If you own your own small business and want to book your own paid travel, you’d therefore want to book it under your personal IHG One Rewards account in order to earn at least 10 points per dollar (more depending on status, other IHG promos, etc.); otherwise you’d be stuck earning 6 points per dollar with this promotion (or only 3 points per dollar normally) if allocating the booking to your IHG Business Rewards account.
For small business earners there could be a workaround, but I’ve not tested this out. If your partner also works for your business, they could presumably set up an IHG Business Rewards account and book stays for you allocated to your IHG One Rewards account number. Your partner would therefore earn points from IHG Business Rewards, while you’ll earn points from IHG One Rewards (or vice versa depending on who’s actually staying).
With IHG Business Rewards letting you transfer points to other members for free, one of you could then transfer earned points to the other. Be aware though that there were a number of reports of people not being able to transfer points despite registering for IHG Business Rewards, so YMMV.
Note that reservations, meetings and/or events have to be booked by December 31, 2024 to earn double points, but it’s valid on travel, meetings and/or events through June 30, 2025.
Thanks for the reminder – I signed up last after P1/P2 got the Personal cards – but the link for free transfer was broken (or doesn’t show if you haven’t been a member for 30 days.
So I was finally able to combine our points – it will make using them for multiple nights so much easier.
Anyone else have a hard time registering for Business Rewards? I thought I had done it years ago. Been trying to register again now for months and every time it says “our system is temporarily unavailable…” Says to contact customer service but they say wait and try later. Is there a workaround to sign up for this?
