IHG Extending Credit Card Free Night Certificates Through 12/31/21

4

A few months ago, IHG announced that many free night certificates that were due to expire on August 31, 2021 would be extended through the end of the year.

That wasn’t the case for all certificates though, as there were some older certificates that had been issued some time ago and only extended to August 31, 2021 due to COVID. Many of those particular certificates weren’t previously due to be extended again, but IHG has seemingly changed their minds and is now giving you even longer to use them as those too are having their expiration date extended to December 31, 2021.

IHG extended free night certificates.

This extension only applies to free night certificates received from IHG Select and IHG Premier cards rather than certificates earned from other avenues. Non-credit card issued certificates from the applicable time period are likely few and far between, so hopefully very few people will now be left with a certificate expiring at the end of August.

All of my certificates had already been extended to December 31, but Greg had a certificate that until recently was due to end on August 31. When checking his account the other day, he verified that it’s now showing an expiry date of December 31, 2021.

That’s an improvement on how IHG previously dealt with certificate extensions. There were many IHG Rewards members at the end of last year with certificates due to expire on December 31, 2020. It was only a couple of weeks before the end of the year that IHG announced that they’d extend certificates, although the way they went about that was by issuing brand new certificates valid until August 31, 2021 but letting members keep the certificates expiring at the end of 2020. At least this time they’re extending the certificates three months before they’re due to end which means there’ll hopefully be fewer sub-optimal redemptions. I don’t think IHG has sent an official announcement to affected IHG Rewards members though which is somewhat surprising as you’d think they’d want credit for a positive change such as this.
