In what’s pretty much a monthly occurrence, Kroger has released a couple of new digital coupons offering 4x fuel points. One is for third party gift cards and the other for fixed-value Visa and Mastercard gift cards.

Quick Thoughts

These digital coupons should be available at nearly all of the grocery store chains that Kroger owns, including Ralphs, Fred Meyer, King Soopers and more.

Kroger’s fuel points can be used for discounts on up to 35 gallons of gas. That means you can save up to 14% on third party gift cards which is great value for brands like Amazon. Kroger has several other digital coupons for specific gift card brands right now (e.g. Ruby Tuesday, Spotify, JCPenney, Michaels and more), so you can stack with this 4x coupon for additional savings.

The Visa and Mastercard gift cards aren’t quite as profitable due to the activation fees, but they can still be worthwhile if you have a vehicle(s) with a larger gas tank. I think the $100 cards come with a $5.95 activation fee, so buying two of those would cost you a total of $211.90. In return you’d get 847 fuel points and I’ll assume you spend $53 on groceries at Kroger to take that total up to 900. 900 fuel points will get you 90c off per gallon, so you’d only need to fill up with just over 13 gallons in order to break even; fill up with more than that and you come out ahead.

Not only are these a good way to save money on gas, but they also provide an opportunity to rack up some bonused spend at grocery stores. For example, the Chase Freedom is 5x at grocery stores this quarter, the Amex Gold offers 4x Membership Rewards year-round, etc.

King Soopers hasn’t been giving 4x for the fees for quite some time. So 2- $100 cards would only yield 800 fuel points.
