A couple of times per year Southwest runs a promotion where you can earn a limited-time Companion Pass. They’ve just launched another round of that promotion that can get you a free Companion Pass valid for a couple of months at the start of next year.
The Deal
- Get a limited-time Southwest Companion Pass when doing the following:
- Register for this offer and then book one round-trip or two one-way flights by September 5, 2024.
- Travel by November 20, 2024.
- Receive a Companion Pass valid from January 6-March 6, 2025.

- Register for this promotion, then book one round trip or two one-way qualifying Southwest flights between 8:00 a.m. Central Time (“CT”) on September 3, 2024 and 11:59 p.m. CT on September 5, 2024 (the “Promotion Period”) for travel from September 3, 2024 to November 20, 2024 (the “Travel Period”), and fly during the Travel Period to earn a promotional Companion Pass valid for use between January 6, 2025 and March 6, 2025.
- To register for this promotion, you will need to provide your Southwest Rapid Rewards account number at the time of registration. If you do not have a Rapid Rewards account number, you may register for an account by going online to Southwest.com/rapidrewards to become a Member. Rapid Rewards accounts are free.
- Member must register for this promotion, book one round trip or two one-way qualifying Southwest flights during the Promotion Period for travel during the Travel Period, and fly during the Travel Period.
- Registration must be completed prior to booking and commencement of travel.
- Valid on new qualifying flights booked during the Promotion Period for travel during the Travel Period and flown within the Travel Period.
- Member’s qualifying flight must be booked through Southwest.com or swabiz.com during the Promotion Period for travel that must be completed during the Travel Period.
- Member’s Rapid Rewards account number must be entered at the time of booking Member’s qualifying flight to earn a promotional Companion Pass valid for use between January 6, 2025 and March 6, 2025.
- A qualifying one-way flight for this promotion is a one-way flight on Southwest Airlines from an origin city to a destination city, including any intermediate stops and/or connections on Southwest Airlines. A qualifying round trip flight for this promotion is a round trip flight on Southwest Airlines from an origin city to a destination city and back to the originating airport or carrier-recognized co-terminal.
- Valid on new reservations booked within the Promotion Period for travel during the Travel Period only.
- Travel booked or flown prior to registration for this promotion is not eligible for this promotional Companion Pass offer.
- Reward travel and Cash + Points bookings qualify for this promotional offer.
- Companion Pass, charter flights, group travel, and Southwest Vacations packages do not qualify as one-way or round trip flights for this promotion. Changes made to any itinerary after purchase of a one-way or round trip flight may eliminate qualification for this promotion.
- The promotional Companion Pass is valid from January 6, 2025 through March 6, 2025 and allows you to designate one person to fly with you, free of airline charges (does not include taxes and fees from $5.60 one-way) on flights purchased by you, booked through Southwest, and completed between January 6, 2025 and March 6, 2025.
- You may change your designated Companion up to three times while you have promotional Companion Pass.
Quick Thoughts
These Companion Pass promotions have quite a few limitations on their usefulness due to the various dates involved. You only get three days in which to book qualifying flights. You then have to fly by November 20 and then the Companion Pass is only valid for a couple of months in the new year.
That said, if you anticipate doing a lot of travel from January 6-March 6 with another person – or other people seeing as you can change the designated companion up to three times – this has the potential to save you a decent amount of money and/or Rapid Rewards points.
Note that if you already have flights booked during the eligible period, those won’t qualify for this offer. Instead, after registering you’d need to rebook the flights by September 5 and hope they haven’t gone up in price in the meantime.

If I book a one way flight for someone else can I simply use my rapid rewards # for that person?
Unfortunately not – the name on the Rapid Rewards account has to match the name of the person traveling.
Awesome deal ! While not explicitly stated, I assume you can pay for the flight with flight credits as those are still considered ‘cash’ payments, right?
Do we know if the flight you book have to be for yourself to count? Or could I book a round trip flight for a friend and then receive a companion pass myself under this promotion?
It’ll be linked to the Rapid Rewards account of the person flying, so it’d be your friend who’d earn the Companion Pass provided they register for the promo before booking.
