MGM Rewards Status Matching to Marriott is Live

10

Last month, Marriott and MGM released the extremely underwhelming details of their new partnership. Coming on the heels of Hyatt’s longstanding relationship with MGM, which included reciprocal status-matching and reasonably good benefits, the Marriott version is, well, Bonvoy-ish.

MGM is not allowing Marriott Bonvoy members to status match to MGM Rewards, but we were told it would soon be possible for MGM elite members to match their status to Bonvoy. That ability is now live and can be accessed via elite members’ online MGM accounts.

The Deal

  • Those with MGM Rewards Gold status and above can now link their MGM accounts to their Marriott Bonvoy accounts and tier match into the Marriott Bonvoy program. Marriott elite benefits will be awarded as follows:
  • MGM Rewards Gold –> Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite
    • Ultimate reservation guarantee
    • Free in-room Wi-Fi
    • Late checkout (based on availability)
    • 10% Marriott Bonvoy Bonus points on eligible spend
  • MGM Rewards Platinum –> Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite
    • Ultimate Reservation guarantee
    • Free in-room Wi-Fi
    • 2pm checkout (based on availability)
    • 25% Marriott Bonvoy bonus points on eligible spend
    • Enhanced room upgrades (based on availability)
  • MGM Rewards NOIR –> Marriott Bonvoy Ambassador Elite
    • Ultimate reservation guarantee
    • Your24 check-in and check-out flexibility
    • Free in-room Wi-Fi
    • Lounge access
    • Ambassador service
    • Nightly upgrade awards
    • 4pm checkout based on availability
    • 75% Marriott Bonvoy bonus
    • Enhanced room upgrade, including select suites (based on availability)
  • Initial tier status match and benefits are valid through December 31, 2024.

How to Match MGM Status to Marriott

  1. First, sign into your MGM Rewards account
  2. Go to the “My Rewards” page
  3. Select “Link a Marriott Bonvoy Account”
  4. In the pop-up window, click “Link a Marriott Bonvoy Account”
  5. Enter your Marriott Bonvoy log-in info and you should see a message that says “your Marriott Bonvoy account has been linked”

Quick Thoughts

For folks used to Hyatt and MGM’s “status match merry-go-round,” this scaled-down version isn’t terribly exciting. It’s not just that it’s a one-way road from MGM to Marriott, but in order to get meaningful status, you have to be MGM Noir. There’s no way for mid-tier MGM Rewards members to get higher than Bonvoy Gold. In addition, the match is only valid until the end of 2024 and there’s no guarantee it will be extended after that.

Still, for MGM elite members, it’s better than nothing. Even if you don’t have any plans to stay at a Marriott property before the end of the year, it’s worth doing the match just in case.
