Frequent Miler's latest team challenge, Million Mile Madness, is happening now! Follow us as Greg, Nick, and Stephen compete to earn 1 Million SAS miles by flying 15 airlines before November 23rd. Who will complete the challenge with the most Speed, Affordability, and Style?

Follow along here!

Chase is now offering its best-ever 100K welcome bonus on the Chase Sapphire Preferred card via the refer-a-friend program. This could be an awesome deal as they have also increased the bonus for referring friends: current Sapphire Preferred cardholders can receive 20,000 Ultimate Rewards points for each friend approved (up to 100K points per calendar year) and their friend will now receive the current 100,000 point offer on the Sapphire Preferred (after spending $4,000 in the first 3 months).

This is great news as referral offers were previously only showing the old 80K + $50 offer. If you still have your old referral link, I believe you’ll need to generate a new link to be able to refer to the 100K offer.

A couple playing in 2-player mode could wind up with 120,000 points between the person making the referral and the person opening the card and meeting the spend, which is an awesome deal for incredibly valuable points. Note that there is an in-branch offer that waives the annual fee in the first year (the annual fee is not waived when you apply online), but the 20,000 points more than makes up for paying the fee since you could cash out those points for at least $200 (or pay yourself back for $250 in grocery purchases at the time of writing!). Please do not post your referral links in the comments here as links will get caught in our spam filter and will not post.

What would you say the ethics are when it comes to referrals… now that I know there is an in branch offer that waives the fee, should I be telling my friends they can sign up that way. Should I say nothing about it? Maybe I should just mention the in branch offer but express appreciation for those who sign up for my link. Thoughts?

The 20K points is more valuable than the $95 fee. So, the best is for you to earn the bonus – to me it doesn’t matter who get more as long as it’s not the bank … 🙂

Here is a scenario for a 2 player game:

P1 has Sapphire Reserve and P2 has Sapphire Preferred, both for almost 5 years meaning they can both get the bonus again and both are under 5/24 and both have healthy Ultimate Rewards balances.

P2 also has another Chase card which can transfer points, P1 does not.

P1 has seldom used the benefits of the Reserve besides the airline credit, maybe a hotel stay or two.  P2 has used the card primarily for the rental car insurance.

What is the best strategy to maximize bonuses in 2021 assuming that they don’t much mind whether they have the Preferred or the Reserve as they have rarely used the extra benefits of the Reserve card.

The obvious is for P1 to:
1)     transfer all points to P2
2)     P1 cancels Reserve card which is not really needed
3)     wait a month
4)     P2 refers P1 for the Preferred card
5)     Assuming P1 gets the card, wait until P2’s bonus arrives
6)     P2 cancels Preferred (and uses AMEX Platinum for the car insurance)
7)     P1 refers the Preferred card to P2
8)     Wait a month or so
9)     P2 applies for the Preferred

If all works well, and the offer stays for a while, this could end up with 240,000 bonus points in total for $8K spend.

Any better suggestion?

I already have a Sapphire Preferred card and my wife is an authorized user. Because she is an authorized user of my card, will she qualify for the 100,000 point offer, and even more importantly, if she does qualify, do I qualify for the referral bonus if I refer her?

Scott

Awesome! I’ve been waiting for this. Is there any indication as to when this offer will expire?

I saved a link for the previous referral offer of 80K and it clearly said “Expires 12/6/2021” but I don’t see an expiration for the 100K link I just saved.

after doing research – it appears i can not. ^

SECOND question: can I chain this – ie:

1) I open card through referral link from friend.
2) Once I am approved and have card number, i refer another friend.
3) once everyone spends the minimum:

my first friend: gets 20k
myself: gets 100k PLUS 20k for referring another friend
my another friend: gets 100k

thanks for any help here!

melissa

thank you so much. I currently have a reserve card and i’m afraid to downgrade it (for now).

My partner is a n00b when it comes to all this stuff so i’ll just be bringing him to the chase branch today to get one for himself.

Hi Nick, Do I have to wait for some time period (days, weeks, months) after downgrading my current reserve card before I can apply for preferred for 100K bonus (using referral link)?

melissa

stupid question – do i need to actually HAVE the preferred card in order to refer a friend? i have the:

reserve
freedom (the no fee 5% quarterly one that used to be slate forever ago)
freedom unlimited (the new one)

thanks!

melissa

thx!

Seems crazy. I have the Reserve but am a Sapphire Preferred alumnus. No referring allowed. 🙁

Great news, Nick!

I am starting to think the Preferred card is the way to go over the Reserve now, and I am seriously considering getting rid of my Reserve after 3 years. There just are not enough benefits to justify paying an extra $155 per year to me ($550 – $300 credit – $95 AF on Preferred). Especially if you can pair the Preferred with the Freedom Unlimited and earn 3x on grocery and restaurants, or you can get the Citi Premier or the Amex gold or several other great options, the Reserve just does not hold up as the gold standard anymore. Basically the only tangible benefits I can think of for the Reserve are the 1.5 cpp in travel portal or pay yourself back for a limited time, and enhanced travel protections over the Preferred, and I suppose the Priority Pass if you don’t get that with any other card. I really hope the Reserve sees they are losing in the premium travel rewards space and do something to catch up with the others, as raising the AF to $550 just does not seem like a smart move to me. Thoughts?
