Giant Eagle grocery stores have what looks like an amazing promo starting today: earn 20c in Fuelperks for every $50 you spend on all Travel, Auto, and Anywhere category gift cards. As you can see below, the example images include Visa and Mastercard gift cards, so I expect those fit in the “Anywhere” category, which makes this a huge return if you have a use for the fuel points.

Quick Thoughts

This looks like a fantastic deal if you can use Giant Eagle fuel points (which, best I can tell can be used at GetGo gas stations in Indiana, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia).

Fuelperks can be used on up to 30 gallons of gas, meaning you’ll earn up to $6 off for every $50 you spend in gift cards. That’s a return of 12%. If you can fill up a 30-gallon tank, you’d therefore save as much as $24 with the purchase of a $200 Visa Gift Card, which certainly beats the $6.95 activation fee online. I’m not sure whether or not online purchases from Giant Eagle would trigger extra points on a card that earns a good category bonus at US supermarkets.

Of course, if you do not have a use for 30 gallons of fuel and/or do not live in an area near these stores, this may not be useful for you. As pointed out by GC Galore, Giant Eagle FuelPerks expire at the end of the month two months after the month in which they are earned. In other words, fuel points you earn today will be valid until the end of April, giving you enough time for a road trip or two even if you don’t live in the coverage area for using your points.

Nick,
The purchase of a $200 Visa Gift Card online comes with a $6.95 activation fee, not the $4.95 you noted in the article. The purchase of a $50 VGC comes with the $4.95 fee.

One of you commenters states that you can use VGCs to purchase 3rd party gift cards at Giant Eagle. Has that been your experience?

Dee

I live in Giant Eagle Country. Yes, you can buy 3rd party gift cards with a Visa GC at Giant Eagle. It is how I use up small balances on Visa or MC gift cards. Self-serve checkouts are best so I don’t hold up a line at a regular check out. I’ve used as many as 6 cards for one transaction. I don’t know if there is a limit.

You can also buy Giant Eagle/Get Go gift cards at Get Go with Chase Freedom for 5x URs (no fuel perks on store GCs), then use those cards at Giant Eagle to buy 3rd party cards and get Fuel Perks.

Giant Eagle Shopper

The amazing part of this deal is that you can purchase the Visa GCs, then literally turn around and buy restaurant or retail (Amazon included) gift cards with the Visa gift cards to get TRIPLE the savings on fuel perks (i.e. $.30/gal for every $50 spent). Since the purchase of the Visa gift card also counts as a grocery store purchase using the AmEx Blue Preferred credit card, you save another 6%, which essentially saves a person 24%. However, the $6.95 Visa activation fee offsets the savings a little. But still a great deal. Here’s the math to prove it:

$206.95 ($200 VISA gift card + $6.95 activation fee)
– 12.42 (6% cash back by using AmEx Blue Preferred credit card)
– 24.00 (free gas from Giant Eagle gas station…assuming you get 30 gal. max…x $.20 x 4)
– 12.00 (free gas from using the VISA card to purchase any retail/restaurant gift card at Giant Eagle 30 gal x $.10 x 4)
———–
$158.53 net cost of $200 gift card (savings of 21%)

I’ve done the VISA trick for years now and it’s saved our family THOUSANDS of dollars. The best time to do it is when they offer $.20 fuel perks on all of their gift cards (they do that multiple times a year). Then you basically get $.40 fuel perks for every $50 spent. We’ve gone on Disney vacations for a fraction of the price when using this method. We pay for everything Disney (resort, park tickets, cruise fare, food) by using Disney gift cards from GE and save between 20% – 25%. This blows away any savings from a Disney dining plan or credit card 2% cash back.

Or just roll the Visa GCs in to other Visa GCs lol

and then you wonder why they will eventually shut it down

Giant eagle just changed there format. Hoping someone can explain this in simple terms as far as MS. Thanks Program Overview:
You earn 1 perk for every $1 spent inside Giant Eagle, Market District and GetGo – including groceries, prescription copays, Curbside Express orders, and gift cards.
You earn 2 perks for every 1 gallon of fuel you pump at GetGo.
For every 50 perks accumulated, you earn 2% off a future grocery order OR 10¢ off per gallon of GetGo fuel.
You choose how you’d like to use your perks and you can redeem on up to 20% off any grocery order (in a single transaction of up to $10,000 in qualifying purchases) or up to a free tank of gas (up to 30 gallons of fuel in a single transaction for one vehicle). Perks accumulated beyond the current price of fuel or above 20% may be used on a future shopping trip.
The perks reward is not valid on State and Federally funded prescriptions (including, but not limited to Medicare, Tricare, Medicaid and PACE).

Additional Program Details:
Only purchases made at registers where the Giant Eagle Advantage Card is scanned are eligible. Your Giant Eagle Advantage Card must be presented at the time of purchase.

Customers will not earn perks on orders where they are redeeming discounts. Any retailer gift cards in an order will still earn perks since they are not eligible for the 20% grocery discount.
Discounts expire two months after the last day of the month (up to 90 days) in which they’re earned. Any amount spent toward your next reward will expire if your account has not been deemed active in three months (has not earned or redeemed any grocery or gas discounts in that time period).
Discount totals and expiration amounts will appear on your receipt, mobile apps and on GiantEagle.com, MarketDistrict.com, and GetGoCafe.com.
Discounts are calculated after all store discounts, and all coupons (including manufacturer coupons) have been subtracted from the order. Perks are not earned on the amount of sales tax and other taxes paid by the consumer.
Giant Eagle, Market District and GetGo reserve the right to discontinue or modify this program at any time. Any changes to the fuelperks+ program will not alter or revoke any discounts a customer has earned.

Valid dates are 2/21-2/27. FYI you can buy GC online at Giant Eagle and earn the gas points if you make sure your rewards number is entered. Not sure if they code as grocery but probably do.
