I booked a roundtrip flight to San Diego that was on July 20-25, but I believe I did it before I registered for the promotion. I called Southwest and the lady I talked to said that it should count because it falls within the promotion dates, but I don’t believe she knows for sure. I also have booked 4 upcoming roundtrip flights and will complete them by Oct. 31. Now I am just not sure if I need to book one more roundtrip flight or how to really check if I will qualify for the companion pass. Do you have any recommendations on what I should do?
I would go by the stated terms versus word of mouth, though I have heard of some people who did qualify anyway. Just to be safe, what I would do is book that last one near the very end of the promotional date (Oct 31) and after you complete the first 5 flights, call Southwest and see if they can verify the companion pass status. If it works, you can cancel the last trip and use it for future travel!
Thanks!
I fly SW 20-30 times a year for business, but all within CA. I wish I were targeted for this promo.
Even within CA you will still qualify, as long as the flight departs or returns to any of the CA airports that qualify (which are pretty much all of them). For example, Roundtrip SFO to LAX will count as 1 qualifying roundtrip flight (or 2 one way flights).
BTW, you likely don’t need to be targeted for this promo anyhow. If you are flying that many times anywhere that SW flies, you probably already have a certain number of points this year. If you racked up about let’s say 58k points so far in the year, you could sign up for the SWA Premier credit card and earn 50k points free after $2k in spending within 3months. That’ll get you 98K points plus the 2k points in spending (it counts too), that totals to 110,000 points to qualify for companion pass for rest of the current year and all of the following calendar year. Sorry to repeat some of the info already given, but since you fly 30times more than I do for work (which I don’t LOL) you have a really good chance even without the promo. Good luck!
I have about 30k points. Can I use these points to count towards the 5 round trips? And get the Companion Pass? Does anyone know?
Terms say it needs to be REVENUE based, so buying with points does nothing.

[…] Southwest Companion pass […]
My husband also got this targeted offer. He applied for the Southwest Credit card and got approved. We are yet to receive the card. He will get the companion pass by taking 5 roundtrip flights so won’t be needing the 50 K bonus. Can we change his Rapid Rewards number to mine so that I earn the 50K points in my Rapid Rewards account? I am also thinking of applying for the card so we both have a companion pass.
Due to work / family commitments, it’s been many years since I’ve been a frequent flyer.
However, this year, Southwest has been showing me lots of LUV – they offered me a fast track to AList (which I qualified for even though, surprisingly, some of my tickets were booked outside the qualification period -but all flights were flown within the qualification period).
I was targeted for the offer and would like to take advantage of this one too. I am based in DEN and can only fly after work hours / on weekends.
Any tips on finding inexpensive flights to help me qualify for the offer? Doesn’t really matter where I go…just anywhere I could do quick turns. For example, could I book a 6 am flight to DEN, nest a RT (e.g. – PHX to LAX) then return to DEN late the same evening to qualify for two RTs? What is the risk if I miss a flight due to weather or mechanical delays?
I do have one trip that I booked last September – but the price is much higher now than the price I paid earlier this year – so it doesn’t make sense to re-book.
What other strategies are people in DEN using to qualify?
Thanks for your help!
I am targeted. When I register, if I already have a revenue trip purchased during the qualifying dates but it was purchased before I was targeted and registered, will this count towards my 5 round trips?
Based on the terms it seems like it will.
I’ve read from other comments that some people who booked prior still qualified, but from the terms:
Bookings made prior to July 7, 2016 or prior to registering for this promotion are ineligible. Changes made to itineraries after purchase may eliminate qualification for promotion. Please allow up to 15 business days after qualifying for Companion Pass to receive your notification to designate your companion. Visit Southwest.com® to review the full Companion Pass program rules and regulations. All Rapid Rewards rules and regulations apply.
A friend of mine just got the same offers Denver.
