Quick Thoughts
I am not an Apple user myself, but reports in the related Slickdeals thread indicate that some people have sent a gift card to themselves and received the $5. I did see one tip in the thread — after you buy the gift card, you have to go back into iMessage to send it. Free coffee always comes in handy for me. Hopefully,Ā they will do a similar promotion with Android pay to stack with the $5 back on $5 via Android pay :-).

I already have apple pay set up on my phone and my phone is up to code for this however when I try to go into starbucks via message it tells me to set up apple pay. How do I fix this?
I’m sorry — as an Android guy, I’m not sure. You might want to try asking in the Slickdeals thread — I bet someone there would be able to help you get squared away on that quickly:

Just to be clear, you need to use the imessage starbucks app. Not the regular starbucks app. https://www.starbucks.com/card/imessage-mobile-gift
