Stephen’s #40KFarAway Research: Priority Pass Lounges With Showers

After a long flight, there’s not much better than a refreshing shower. Even more so when you’re doing the 40k To Faraway challenge and won’t necessarily have overnight accommodation for days at a time.

My #40kFaraway strategy has changed over the last few months. One of my original strategies had me trying to fly as far as possible to as many different destinations as possible. I ultimately decided against this as it wouldn’t leave me any time or money to actually explore each location, so I’d simply be flying from airport to airport. Technically I might have been able to win the challenge from a distance perspective, but I wouldn’t be traveling – I’d be transporting.

I did spend quite a few late nights exploring that strategy though. One of the key features of going down that avenue was ensuring the airports I’d be flying to had Priority Pass lounges available. If I wasn’t going to be leaving the airport, I’d need to be able to eat at each one and airport food is expensive – more expensive than I’d be able to afford on 40,000 points and $400.

Priority Pass lounges would therefore have been a vital element in that strategy. Food wasn’t the only consideration though; constant traveling with no hotel room meant I’d need access to showers, something that’s easier said than done.

If you’re flying internationally on a business or first class ticket, there’s a very good chance that you’ll also have access to a lounge with shower facilities. If you’re flying economy and relying on Priority Pass, your options aren’t necessarily going to be as good. Most international hubs are less of a problem as they tend to have at least one Priority Pass lounge with a shower. Even that might not be ideal though because if it’s in a different terminal and you have a tight connection for another flight, you might not have time to freshen up.

Priority Pass sadly doesn’t make it easy to find lounges with showers. While their website lists the facilities available at each lounge, there’s no easy way to search for specific facilities by airport, city or country. For example, let’s say you want to fly to Bali and have numerous connecting options in Asia. You’d need to search each airport (Narita, Incheon, Hong Kong, Singapore, etc.), then drill down to each individual Priority Pass lounge at each of those airports to see which lounges have showers available.

We therefore thought it would be helpful to create a (somewhat) limited resource of Priority Pass lounges worldwide with showers. With more than 1,300 Priority Pass lounges at more than 650 airports worldwide, I’m afraid I haven’t had time to do the legwork to click through to every single lounge available to ascertain which ones have showers.

This list is therefore mostly a list of airports I checked along the way when trying to piece together an airport to airport to airport to airport to airport to airport to airport itinerary. I’ve also created a separate list of airports that don’t have Priority Pass lounges with showers that I came across when doing my research. I’ve thrown in a number of airports I didn’t initially research so that Greg and Nick have less of an idea of what I have planned!

It’s always best to do your own research before a trip though as Priority Pass lounge options change all the time. Some might remove shower facilities, some charge to use them, while others might restriction access. For example, some only allow entry three hours before your flight, while some international lounges don’t allow access on arrival unless you have a connecting flight.
