Stop & Shop launched an excellent gift card deal last Friday and we realized that we hadn’t actually covered it here yet. When you buy $100 of third party gift cards, you’ll get a $20 coupon that can be used on your next shopping trip. Even better, this deal can be done multiple times and is running for the next few weeks.

Stop & Shop $20 Off $100 Gift Cards

The Deal

  • Buy $100 third party gift cards at Stop & Shop and get coupon for $20 off your next shopping trip.
  • Direct link to weekly ad (see page 15).

Key Terms

  • Offer valid November 8-28, 2019.
  • $20 coupon expires December 5, 2019.
  • Excludes Visa, Mastercard, reloadable and Stop & Shop gift cards.
  • Limit 1 per transaction.
  • Limit 10 transactions overall.

Quick Thoughts

This is a fantastic promotion seeing as you can do this deal more than once. As far as I’m aware, there’s no limit on how many times you can take advantage of this deal, although I’m sadly not going to be near any Stop & Shop stores over the next few weeks to be able to test it out for myself. Update: As per comments below, the receipt says that there’s a limit of 10.

The weekly ad displays a bunch of different gift card brands including Home Depot, Bed Bath & Beyond, Starbucks, iTunes and more. My understanding though is that all third party gift cards are eligible, so you should also be able to buy other brands like Amazon, Best Buy, etc. Saving 20% on any third party gift card is a rare opportunity, especially considering the promotion is running for several weeks.

One important feature of this offer that should be noted is that the $20 isn’t an instant discount. Instead, it prints as a coupon on your receipt, so you’ll need to keep that. The $20 coupon expires on December 5, so it’s not like they’re giving you a $20 Stop & Shop gift card that’ll never expire. Still, with Thanksgiving and other holidays coming up, it shouldn’t be too hard to redeem the $20 coupons before they expire.

Any DP of this working on Amazon GC? I tried at my local on BB and Amazon. BB receipt triggered Amazon didn’t. Not sure if system glitch or not.

Amazon GC did trigger the credit for me. make sure you dont go above 10 per account as thats mentioned in T&C

Its a great deal, as SS gift card selection is usually very big. I’ve redeemed 4 $20 coupons so far

If you REALLY like Stop & Shop and would be shopping there anyway, this makes for a good stack with the 20% off w/MR offer on Amazon. Buy $200 in Amazon GCs w/Amex Gold, get $40 S&S credit + 800 MR. Then buy $250 Stop & Shop GCs for $200 with the Amazon GC. That’s:
$200.00 cash spent
$40 Stop & Shop credit
$250 Stop & Shop GCs
That $290 would’ve earned 1160 MR if it were actual spend. Instead, you earned 800 MR (and spent 1).

In summary: it’s like charging $290 of Stop & Shop purchases to the Gold, and then redeeming 361 MR = ~$7 value for $90 cash (an $83 moneymaker).

Even without the offer, funneling through Amazon lets you use the offer on Stop & Shop GCs (which are specifically excluded). That’s basically 16.7% off on Stop & Shop. Use the Gold and you retain the 4X (on the discounted total).

I would just be careful using the Gold for gift card purchases. It seems merchant GCs are still okay, but you never know when that could change (or if it’s already changed and will be clawed back). I’m using the “fully visible” approach myself, buying them in separate transactions; at least if they claw them back, I can say I was upfront about it and wasn’t trying to game the system; rather a clawback than a shutdown. Besides, it’s not like the terms say you can only buy GCs from non-bonused merchants (I think that would be against their agreements with merchants anyway). I’ve had no problems yet with Raise or merchants that I know report L3 data (or whatever Amex’s version of it is called).

Any idea if purchasing an AMEX gift card will trigger the $20 coupon?

Evan

I used this offer two times yesterday. I’m not sure if it is enforced but on my receipt it says 10 offers per household. Stacks with happy gift card digital coupon for $10 off groceries with$50 happy card (that one expires 11/13)

Audrey

In the past a limit of 10 was hard coded.

Audrey

Correct.

ANDY

Just making sure here.. the $20 discount could be applied to the second purchase of a 3rd party gift card correct or is that excluded?
