American Express launched new transfer bonuses to Avios programs today which appear to be available to everyone with Membership Rewards-earning cards.

There’s an additional transfer bonus to Hilton Honors that also gives a bonus of up to 30%, but this one is only available to targeted cardholders.

Quick Thoughts

Usually when Amex offers targeted transfer bonuses, it seems to be to Etihad Guest or Cathay Pacific Asia Miles, although there have been the odd occasions in the past where they’ve offered targeted Hilton transfer bonuses and those have come in two forms.

Once or twice it’s been targeted in the sense that some people don’t get a bonus at all. Other times, there have been transfer bonuses that everyone is targeted for, but where the bonus percentage itself has been targeted, so some people have gotten, for example, 40% bonuses in some cases and 50% bonuses in others. It’s possible that a similar thing will happen with this new bonus, so let us know if you see something higher or lower than 30%. Update: Satellite has shared in the comments that there are targeted offers for 20% and 25% too.

Amex normally transfers to Hilton on a 1,000:2,000 basis, so a 30% transfer bonus increases that ratio to 1,000:2,600. Our Reasonable Redemption Value for Hilton points is 0.48 cents per point, so with this transfer bonus you could reasonably expect to get at least 1.25 cents per point of value from your Membership Rewards. That’s not a tremendous return, but it could still be of interest for some, especially if there’s a much higher value redemption that you have planned.

Something to bear in mind is that when Amex runs these targeted transfer bonuses, they sometimes disappear quickly. There have been occasions in the past where people have seen a transfer bonus when logging in, but if they don’t take advantage of it there and then it disappears. If this Hilton bonus is something that you might be interested in, it could therefore be worth making that decision before logging in and processing the transfer immediately just in case it does indeed subsequently disappear. Obviously make sure that you were targeted in the first place though!

No bonus for me

GUSTAVO

need help – 120k from amex to Alaska before it ends, or 2.6x on hilton?

Fuzzy

Most people would value 1 AS > 2.6 HH, so that’s the right pick in a vacuum, but it really depends on your personal situation.

GUSTAVO

yea I think I would be more prone to hilton if I at least had silver (free 5th night), but i dont even have that. AS has really good deals for business to Brazil (50,000 miles), where my family is from. I guess I will end up sending my miles to AS.

Paula OD

nada – not bonus on mine, P2 or P3

ross

I see 25% bonus offer. 1000=>2500

Stvr

I would be a bit more emphatic here. Can’t just be “planned.” Has to be locked in. Maybe next week? If you strand points with HH you will be sad.

Gwen

Zero Hilton transfer bonus or me. I have the personal plat, biz plat, and personal gold.

Jeff

datapoint: no Hilton xfer bonus for my amex account. I have multiple aspire cards, in case that may be a factor.

satellite

Bonus percentage is also targeted. I see 20% in one account, 25% in another.
