American Express Membership Rewards is offering a targeted 30% transfer bonus to Virgin Atlantic. I wasn’t targeted for this promotion (bummer as I’d like to take advantage of it and this is the second recent report of a targeted Virgin Atlantic bonus).
The Deal
- Some people are reporting a targeted 30% transfer bonus from Membership Rewards to Virgin Atlantic
Key Terms
- There may be a cap on the number of miles you can transfer with the bonus

Quick Thoughts
Amex has really been making things confusing with these targeted transfer bonuses that don’t show up for everyone and have no specified end date. They’ve now make things even more confusing by adding a cap on the promotion (which may vary from person to person?). Loyalty Lobby reports being targeted with a cap of 75,000 transferred Membership Rewards points (good for 97,500 Virgin Atlantic miles). That’s certainly not bad since it is more than enough for round trip business class from the US to Tokyo on ANA and not far from the 110K/120K you’ll need round trip from the West/East coasts to Tokyo in first class on ANA. On the other hand, it’s disappointing that you can’t use the transfer bonus to put together enough miles for multiple tickets. Most Amex transfer bonuses do not have such a cap.
I really hope Amex doesn’t continue this trend of willy nilly targeted transfer bonuses with no end date. One of the key strengths of Membership Rewards is its transfer bonuses. But if it’s going to be totally hit or miss as to if and when you’ll be targeted and caps are being introduced to boot, the transfer bonuses become a bit less valuable in my opinion.
Still, if you see the bonus, this one could certainly be worth it for some of Virgin Atlantic’s sweet spots.

Can I use VA to book flights on EVA & Singapore? I was going to make a stopover route using ANA miles witch end up using these two airlines, transferred from MR but wondering if I could save some points this way.
