Quick Thoughts
United normally charges 30,000 MileagePlus miles each way between the US and UK, so this award sale saves you 8,000 miles each way. Note that you have to book a round trip to take advantage of this reduced award pricing, so you’ll have to redeem 44,000 miles round trip rather than booking a one-way at 22,000 miles and finding a different option in the other direction.
Award availability is wide open. For example, here’s the award calendar for mid-September to mid-October from Los Angeles to London:
However, be sure to compare award pricing to cash tickets because this award sale could still represent poor value depending on your departure airport. For example, you can book direct flights to the UK for under $450 from NYC. These United award tickets have taxes and fees of ~$210 round trip due to the higher costs when departing the UK, so you could be redeeming 44,000 miles to effectively save $240 which is very poor value.
This award sale ends tonight (February 22), so you’ll need to book quickly if there are award flights you’re interested in booking.
I only ever saw 22k on the outbound, all return flights were 70k for me, totally not worth it
Using points for any booking that includes a flight departing the UK is just a waste, thanks to their departure taxes.
got me two tickets to paradise, thanks Gov
The return flight fees are $200+! Seems like a bad deal 🙁
