Vietnam Airlines is running a new status match that gets you status for a year and which in turn provides SkyTeam status. The downside is that it’s a paid opportunity that won’t gain you access to Delta lounges when flying domestically.
The Deal
- Get a status match to Vietnam Airlines.
- Direct link to offer.
Key Terms
- Once eligible customers pay the application fee and are approved, they will receive 12 months of Titanium, Gold or Platinum status as determined by the Status Match process.
Quick Thoughts
There are almost 50 airlines from which you can match your status, although that obviously excludes airlines like Delta seeing as they’re part of SkyTeam themselves.
Status lasts for a year from when you’re matched which will be useful if you anticipate a lot of travel on SkyTeam airlines through the end of summer next year. You’ll want to ensure you’ll get good value from the match though because this offer comes with a fee of $99, $159 or $299 depending on if you’re matching to Titanium, Gold or Platinum status respectively. Note that Titanium is a lower tier than Gold or Platinum with Vietnam Airlines’ loyalty program Lotusmiles, unlike Marriott Bonvoy where it’s a tier above those two levels.
In terms of benefits, status gets you additional checked baggage, priority check-in, priority boarding, lounge access and more depending on the level. That lounge access is only valid for international flights though; if flying domestically with Delta, you wouldn’t gain access to Sky Clubs unfortunately.
This status match will make the most sense for people actually traveling on Vietnam Airlines as the list of benefits is far more comprehensive. You can view the full lists for Titanium, Gold and Platinum. If you’re in it only for the SkyTeam status, Titanium and Gold match to SkyTeam Elite, while Platinum equates to SkyTeam Elite Plus status.
There’s no scheduled end date for this status match opportunity, so if you’re interested it could be worth applying sooner rather than later in case it gets pulled quickly. Be aware that for SkyTeam status there’s also a Flying Blue status match offer going on at the moment for US residents.
“The downside is that it’s a paid opportunity that won’t gain you access to Delta lounges when flying domestically”. Platinum status indicates that one has the benefits of SkyTeam Elite Plus:
https://www.vietnamairlines.com/us/en/lotusmile/member-benefits/Tier-Benefits/platinum
“The following benefits are for Platinum members. Platinum members will enjoy SkyTeam Elite Plus benefits”
SkyTeam Elite Plus seems to include lounge access worldwide (https://www.skyteam.com/en/about/faq/elite-elite-plus).
Is there some other limitation in this status match that would preclude that? If so, not seeing it?
Thanks!
[…] Vietnam Airlines has a paid, year long status match for non-SkyTeam elites. The price is $99 for low tier, $159 for mid tier, or $299 for high tier status. Vietnam Airlines has five status lines, these are the middle three. The lowest matched status SkyTeam elite, which gets lounge access on international SkyTeam flights including Delta. I unfortunately have Delta Platinum status, and in need of VNA Platinum status lol
Does anyone know if I can match Delta with another alliance’s status, and then match back to VNA?
“In terms of benefits, Titanium status gets you additional checked baggage, priority check-in, priority boarding, lounge access and more.” Do you mean “Platinum”?
I’d started out that paragraph planning on breaking down the benefits by status level, but realized that would be too lengthy and it would be best for people to check the relevant status level(s) for themselves. I’d forgotten to remove the reference to Titanium though, so thanks for that – I’ve just fixed that paragraph.
