For those based on the west coast looking to visit China, there are some incredible fares available right now on Hong Kong Airlines: From $561 round trip in business class from Los Angeles to Shanghai, including A350 service between LA and Hong Kong. It’s even available during Chinese New Year. While Hong Kong Airlines does not belong to an alliance and thus will not be useful for earning miles, their A350 looks like a very comfortable way to get to Asia – and the price is most certainly right.
The Deal
- Round trip business class flights from Los Angeles to Shanghai via Hong Kong from $600 RT on Hong Kong Airlines
- Bookable via Expedia and possibly other OTAs
Quick Thoughts
For those curious about the experience, One Mile at a Time did an in-depth review a couple of months ago, and based on that review I’d say that $561 is a smoking deal.
At the moment, I think you’ll have to hunt around by cicking dates on the calendar at Goolge Flights. The ~$600 results are not populating in the monthly calendar mode, but when you select dates and give it a minute to complete the search, you’ll see the $600 RT fares.
Once you find dates, you can book via Expedia or via the carrier website to save a few bucks more. Here are the dates above that showed “from $2,298” before selecting dates and giving Google a moment to complete the search — it’s just $561 round trip.
Booking directly via the carrier’s website saves you about another $20.
Unfortunately, I do not see these fares available via the Ultimate Rewards or Membership Rewards portals — they show up at north of $3,000 via those sites.
As noted at the top, this fare is even available during Chinese New Year.
As Hong Kong Airlines may get a case of what Gary Leff calls “seller’s remorse”, I’d hold off on making any nonrefundable plans for at least a couple of weeks to be sure this gets honored. That said, if you’re looking to go soon, this one is available as soon as August 31st and continues through the winter. Again, your best bet is to play with the calendar and just click dates and give it a moment to search.
H/T: Flyertalk via Premium Fares
Was able to grab some seats for myself and also got a few friends in on this deal. Thanks for the heads up Nick!!!
Is this dead?
I’m sure it must be – I’ll update the post.
I saw the post this afternoon, but was too busy at work.
I’m curious if they will honor those that got tickets.
Me too because I got a ticket RT LAX to BKK via Hong Kong. I booked mine through Expedia and the phone representative told me that it’s refundable until 12 midnight tomorrow. I’m assuming that if Hong Kong airlines declares they’re not going to honor these tickets obviously the 24 hour cancellation policy is also not pertinent.
For your sake I hope they honor it. I’ll just be kicking myself that I didn’t act on it!
Got it. First time I booked a “mistake ” fare. When will we know whether it be honored or not? Leaving early October.
Generally I feel like they will decide within the next few days, though I’ve seen it take a bit longer before. Good luck!
My first mistake fare as well, early March. I’m a huge Disney fan, and Shanghai Disney is the only one of the six resorts I haven’t visited yet. Here’s hoping….
