There is a new Amex Offer out that’s good for Hello Fresh: Spend $45+, get $10 back up to six times (for a total of up to $60 back). Keep in mind that Hello Fresh codes as groceries, so this could make for a good stack with any cards offering a temporary grocery bonus and should stack with any new member offers.

Quick Thoughts

As noted at the top, purchases from Hello Fresh have coded as grocery for me on Amex cards in the past. When I saw this offer this morning, I made the mistake of adding it to the Amex Gold card. While that would ordinarily be a good move since that card earns one of the best category bonuses at US Supermarkets, I realized that it would have been smarter to sync this to a Hilton Aspire or Surpass card, since those are temporarily earning 12x Hilton points on a purchase like this.

While I don’t regularly subscribe to any meal delivery services, we’ve tried out most of them over the past couple of years. Hello Fresh has been the favorite in my household and the one that we have occasionally continued for a couple months at a time. To be sure, it isn’t typically a “value” compared to shopping at your grocery store, we enjoy getting some meals we wouldn’t have thought to prepare and ingredients we would not necessarily have purchased for a single recipe. The recipes tend to be at least a little healthier than we would otherwise cook and there are a number of dishes that have made their way into our regular dinner rotation from Hello Fresh — though I should note that my wife was a recipe tester for Hello Fresh for a time and she found both when testing and when we’ve subscribed that the recipes can often be kicked up a notch with one or two ingredient additions. I don’t mean by adding something unhealthy — some dishes are just lacking a kick of flavor like a twist of lime or sprinkle of cinnamon. YMMV.

If you’re looking to sign up new, I believe there are basically two paths to take:

1. Sign up via a shopping portal for $20 off on each of your first 3 deliveries + free shipping on the first delivery + portal rewards (30% cash back via TopCashBack or 4,000 Swagbucks via Swagbucks or MyPoints is apparently offering $52.50 in points. If you’re intending to sign up for multiple deliveries, the first method is definitely better as you’ll save more money and earn some portal cash (Swagbucks is likely the better option between the two mentioned above — a site called MyPoints offers even more, but I haven’t tried it myself).

If you’re only looking to try the service for a single week, the referral option can be advantageous. As far as how those two stack with the Amex Offer, it’ll depend on how many servings and meals you want. For example, here is the pricing for 2 people at 3 recipes per week through a referral offer for the first week:

Going through TopCashBack, the price per serving is higher, but shipping is free on the first box and you’ll get 30% back via TopCashBack:

Swagbucks looks like an even better deal for most since you’ll also get 4,000 Swagbucks, worth $40 — but you need to receive two boxes (i.e. sign up for at least 2 weeks) to get Swagbucks per the terms.

You’ll have to do the math to determine the absolute best deal for your family and I think it’ll likely vary some depending on how many people and recipes you choose and how long you intend to get delivery.

Keep in mind that you can skip weeks — at times when we’ve subscribed in the past, we’ve put deliveries on hold for a month or more at a time since we didn’t want them delivered every week. We have also forgotten a month later that we hadn’t either canceled or skipped more weeks and gotten a surprise box from FedEx, so watch out for that.11

Overall, I was happy to see this deal come around again. I don’t know that we’ll definitely do it, but my wife had recently asked if there were any offers available and now I’m glad to see one that is.
