Avianca LifeMiles members can get a 15% transfer bonus when transferring from Membership Rewards points. This means that 1,000 points will become 1,150 miles. I probably wouldn’t speculatively transfer right now, but if you have a short-term redemption in mind, it might make sense.
The Deal
- Get a 15% bonus when transferring Amex Membership Rewards points to Avianca LifeMiles
Key Terms
- Valid for transfers from November 23 to December 15, 2020
- The bonus miles and the transferred miles will be reflected in the account statement in two different transactions.
- Transferred LifeMiles as well as the bonus miles will be accrued no later than 24 hours after American Express Membership Rewards reports the request of miles transfer to LifeMiles.
Quick Thoughts
Again, I wouldn’t make a speculative transfer here. Many people are worried about the financial condition of Avianca. Personally, I’m not too worried about that, generally just wouldn’t want to lose the flexibility of a transferable currency for a relatively small transfer bonus.
There’s also the fact that Avianca has recently offered miles for sale for just 1.1c per mile several times lately (and I believe they are once again right now). That means you’re getting a relatively low value right now in terms of the value of LifeMiles at the moment considering the price to buy the same number of miles.
For instance, if you transferred 100K Membership Rewards points right now, you’d get 115,000 LifeMiles. You could alternatively buy 115,000 LifeMiles for $1,265 right now. That’s a pretty low bar in terms of the value you’re taking for 100K points in my opinion.
I had to cancel a trip this past April and had over 327K points redeposited. I wonder if those miles would be extended. I think I will try and see what happens.
The Airline will be bailed out just like most other European airlines.
A surrender would imply a Star Alliance surrender in Latin America.
In my opinion, United will absorb it. They have COPA but are limited by the plane sizeS and reach. And LATAM is dying to get those routes too.
This promotion is not showing up on any of the three Amex MR accounts which my family hold. I’m assuming this promotion is targeted.
The bonus is from LifeMiles, not Amex.
Not to mention if you bought it for $1265 with Amex Platinum, you would earn 6325 MR points.
I would say buy it, and cash out the points to your Schwab account. You’ll come out ahead $64.06.
Thoughts on the best way to extend expiration of Lifemiles? Mine (6,250) are expiring Jan 31. Transferring 1k MR points would do it, or I could buy $42 worth of miles. Thinking MR is the way to go to avoid investing more than I have to since I don’t have an immediate use.
