Quick Thoughts

There are some fantastic rates available at popular retailers — and in some cases, there are great opportunities for stacking, whether that’s with existing credit card bonus categories or card-linked offers or both.

For instance, I see Office Max / Office Depot is available at 15x via Rakuten. That would stack really well with the 5x you could earn by paying with a card that earns one of the best category bonuses at office supply stores. However, note that you will not earn portal rewards on gift card purchases at Office Max / Office Depot.

There are many retailers where I see stackable deals with current Amex Offers. As an example, there is a Member Week offer out today that’s good for $30 back on $100 or more at Levi, which would stack beautifully with 15x at Levi through Rakuten.

I haven’t worn a pair of jeans in about 20 years, so I probably won’t use that one myself, but it is one of many such examples where you could stack a great deal.

Plenty of other popular retailers are included. The chance to earn 15% back — or, better yet, 15x Membership Rewards points if you’re set up to earn Amex points — could make for some excellent deals. As always, check Cashbackmonitor.com to compare rates and make sure that you’re getting a good deal. Also note that some of the increased offers reported above are targeted, so YMMV as to the rates you’ll see.

You should also check for targeted offers with other portals. For instance, I have an offer for 20% back at Levi via Capital One Shopping, so I could stack the same Amex Offer with Capital One Shopping to save about 50% total on a $100 purchase.

Be sure to keep a close eye on exclusions. For example, the Sixt offer says that Cash Back is only available for the “Pay Now” option. Rentals booked via “Pay Later” option are not eligible for Cash Back. It further goes on to note that it is valid in US, Austria, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, Spain, France, Great Britain, Italy and Netherlands. I’m not sure whether Sixt operates locations outside of that footprint, but be sure you check those exclusions before you rent.
