20% off small appliances & other kitchen @ Best Buy

Discover is offering 20% off  regularly priced “small appliances” at Best Buy with coupon code DISCOVER20NOW or SAVEONSMALLSNOW. I have “small appliances” in quotation marks because the code works on a number of items that aren’t necessarily small appliances — it seems to apply to kitchen items that aren’t major appliances (i.e. pots & pans, robotic vacuums (not Roomba), and some kegerators). Some items become pretty good deals with the code. The Discover code terms state that you must use a Discover card. I haven’t tested whether or not that’s true; however, code SAVEONSMALLSNOW appears to offer the same discount — with that code, this deal could be even better if you’re stacking either the $25 back on $250 Amex Offer or the 5% back in rewards with the Best Buy credit card.

Quick Thoughts

First of all, I don’t know as though the 2018 expiration date is accurate — I might assume that they meant to have a 12/31/17 expiration date and will fix it at some point.

Second, some will likely ignore this code as it states that it must be used on a “regularly-priced small appliance”. The fact that it’s regularly-priced may lead you to believe that reals savings aren’t possible and the words “small appliance” seem less broad than this one really is.

For example, is this robot vacuum a small appliance?

I guess it is. I wouldn’t have thought to categorize it as such, but then I wouldn’t know where to put it other than in “appliances”. Thankfully, Best Buy doesn’t either — because the 20% off code works on this one.

That makes it a bit cheaper than it is on Amazon right now:

Some items have an even better spread compared to the Amazon price. I have no idea if this beer brewing system is any good, but the reviews look pretty solid:

It was $550 on Best Buy with similarly glowing reviews….and it comes down to $439.99 after coupon.

Why is Best Buy selling a beer brewing system? Because if they didn’t, what would you put in this kegerator (on which the coupon also works), Miller Light? Not nearly as hip as home brew.

Note that some items don’t make any sense at all. Is this set of pots and pans a small appliance? Is it regularly priced? The answer to both of those questions would appear to be “no”…but the code takes $14 off of the current price to drop it down to 20% off of the “regular” price. (The code takes a full 20% off of other regular-priced cookware I tested).

No cap?

While the coupon says it works on a single item, the max discount doesn’t even appear to be capped. For example, I tried it on this Jura espresso machine:

When you put it in the cart and apply the code, it sure enough drops to $4,479.20 — $1,119.80 off.

If the code doesn’t actually require paying with a Discover card, or you use the SAVEONSMALLSNOW code, the Best Buy Credit Card signup bonus would become pretty significant on that machine….

Bottom line

It’s always nice to save a few bucks. There will surely be good deals in the coming days. However, with Discover price protection, you can match a lower price on most items if you find one advertised in the next 90 days.This discount would best be paired with items that aren’t often discounted much.
