There are currently excellent fares available this April and May from New York to Okinawa, Japan with prices starting at $445 round trip. These prices are not showing up in Google Flights, but can be found via a variety of third party booking services listed on Momondo.com.
Secret Flying has a list of available dates.
Sample dates shown are May 8th-23rd:
Keep in mind that Japan Airlines and Cathay Pacific are both OneWorld partners that fly out of Okinawa. If you wanted to combine the trip to Okinawa with a trip to Tokyo, Osaka, or Hong Kong, those flights would be only 7500 Avios each way from Okinawa.
Taxes to Hong Kong are a mere $13.09:
To Tokyo, they are only $2.53:
Hotel rates seem fairly reasonable for all of the above destinations at this time of year, but if you hit dates with high prices and you are low on hotel points, you could check out this post on buying IHG points for just over half a penny each (or perhaps less for Spire Elite members). That won’t amount to much savings on the dates I checked, but it’s something to keep in mind as hotel prices in Japan can sometimes be quite expensive.
