United is offering excellent prices for round trip travel to Hawaii late this summer, throughout fall, and into the winter, with prices from New York (Newark) to Kona, HI (The Big Island) from $350 round trip. American also has some availability in mid-fall from $358. With the current point transfer bonus from Membership Rewards to Hawaiian airlines, you could also pick up cheap inter-island flights on points if you’re looking to visit other islands. Availability is quite good on this sale (at least on United).
The Deal
- Round trip flights from New York / Newark to Kona, Hawaii from $350 (dates available from late August through winter)
Finding availability
It’s easiest to find availability using Google Flights. There is a lot more availability with United at the ~$350-$370 price point than with American. Dates available on American for ~$358 are in mid-October into early November.
The late August fares are available on United, with prices from $350 RT. Click the image below to go to Google Flights and then you can play with the calendar view to check other sets of dates.
These are not basic economy fares. The United flights I checked book into G-class, which should earn 50% mileage flown (almost 5,000 miles in this case) in many programs other than United. Availability extends into early December on United.
If you’re looking to fly American, simply set the airline filter to show American Airlines only and you’ll find flights at $358 round trip starting in mid-October to early November.
If you’re booking via United, you’ll want to check out this post from Travis at One Mile at a Time for a nice little trick to get $5 back per flight you book (for you or someone else).
If you’d rather book with points, those who have the Chase Sapphire Reserve could book via the Ultimate Rewards portal for just over 23,000 Ultimate Rewards round trip.
New York to Hawaii for less than 12K each way is a pretty solid deal if you want to use your points.
Bottom line
These are very good prices to fly from New York to Hawaii. You can even be there for the Van’s World Cup of Surfing (November 25-Dec 6th) at these reduces rates (note that event is on Oahu). If you’re a United credit card holder, remember that you’ll have to pay for your ticket with your United credit card to get a free checked bag (See: Free checked bags via credit card complete guide). AA credit card holders do not need to use their AA card to book the flight to avail themselves of the free bag benefit.
U better really think about going to Kona I’m going to Maui for better air .
