American Express is offering some existing cardholders of the personal SPG card a targeted bonus when meeting certain spend requirements. I received an offer on my card, but it seems like there might be different targeted offers. 
The Deal
- Earn 10,000 bonus points when spending $4,000 and an additional 5,000 bonus points when spending an additional $2,000.
Key Terms
- Registration required by October 31, 2018.
- Spending must be completed by November 30, 2018.
Quick Thoughts
I almost missed that my account had been targeted for this spending offer. I usually log in to American Express using the old login interface as I prefer its layout and how easy it is to switch between accounts. The problem is that some offers don’t seem to be displayed in that old interface and this is one of them. When logging in at americanexpress.com, my SPG card showed the following offer: 
Clicking on ‘Register Now’ didn’t provide any additional details about the offer, although it did allow me to enroll my card. 
Still none the wiser about the offer itself, the confirmation email from American Express finally advised what I needed to do to earn the 15,000 bonus Marriott Rewards points. The offer came with two spending tiers – earn 10,000 bonus points when spending $4,000 and an additional 5,000 bonus points when spending an additional $2,000. 
Seeing as the SPG card earns 2 points per dollar on all spend (other than at Marriott & SPG properties where it earns 6 points per dollar), that makes the offer worth at least 4.5 points per dollar on both $4,000 and $6,000 of spend. Doctor of Credit wrote about some similar offers last month and noted that these offers are usually targeted at cardholders when their annual fee is due. Sure enough, mine came due the other day. I’d already decided to renew thanks to the card now offering a free night certificate at renewal. I gave American Express a call this afternoon though to see if there was any kind of retention offer available. The offer they gave was 20,000 bonus points when spending $2,000 in the next three months. These two offers should stack which means that I’ll earn the following if meeting the spend requirements by November 30:
- Spend $4,000 and earn 38,000 bonus points, or
- Spend $6,000 and earn 47,000 bonus points.
That represents a return of 9.5 points per dollar and 7.83 points per dollar respectively. Although not as good as the return from applying for some kind of new credit card, it’s still a decent return and I plan on at least taking advantage of the $4,000 threshold.

hi Stephen, thanks for your sharing. I would like to ask for one simple question: which number should I call to get a retention offer from my amex spg card before the annual fee date which should be on this Nov. ? What kind of reasons I have to mention during that retention call? Thanks.
I called 1800-297-1000 which is the number on the back of the card. I said that the annual fee had just hit and I was trying to decide whether to keep it or close it.
The guy I spoke to did a good job of selling its benefits, but I explained that the elite night credits will be a moot point next year as I’ll get 15 from the Chase Marriott card, I’ll have Platinum status as of next week and so don’t need the card’s silver status and the earning rate is worse given that it had effectively been earning 3 Marriott Rewards per dollar and now only earns 2 per dollar.
I have yet another version: 15k for $6000 spend plus another 5k for an additional $3000 spend by November 30. My annual fee came due about three months ago and at that time I enrolled in (and completed the spend for) a retention offer. Thanks for the notice on this.
That’s interesting that you got an offer several months past your renewal date.
Same here, have the card for 2 years, 1st annual fee due in this April, I enrolled in with a retention offer. Now I got the 10k version spending bonus offer. Overall, I didn’t spend too much in this card, mainly only complete the spending requirement to get bonus points.
My wife’s spg amex personal got a spend $2000 get 6000 points, spend another $1000 get 4000 more points. So basically spend $3000 before nov 30th get 10000 Marriott points. Not bad
I see the SPG card special offer when logged into amex website in my PC. But the link lands me in a blank page with two buttons “My Account” and “Card Benefits”. No language about the offer or any kind of confirmation of offer registration. Anyone else having this problem?

My business version came up as 20K bonus for $10K spend up to 40K bonus. I did two splint payments of my quarterly taxes on it. Hope it works!

Enroll and earn 20,000 points after each $10,000 you spend in eligible purchases on your Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card, up to 40,000 total points, starting from the time you complete enrollment through 12/06/2018.
Mine is terrible. An additional point per $ at US Supermarkets and restaurants, capped at 1,000 points. No incentive to switch from using a CSR here.
Mine is 20k bonus for 10k spend up to 40k bonus for 20k thru Dec 6.
