Thrifty Traveler Premium put out an alert to subscribers today that looks like a hot deal if you don’t mind basic economy to Europe: flights from various US cities are available to Zagreb, Croatia from just $239 round trip. You won’t get a seat assignment, but at these prices you might be OK with traveling light.
The Deal
- Round trip basic economy flights from various US cities to Zagreb, Croatia from just $239 round trip
- Use Momondo for the lowest fares
Quick Thoughts
Unfortunately, looking up availability isn’t going to be a cinch as the cheapest fares are not showing up via Google Flights. Thrifty Traveler reports that the cheap seats are mostly available mid-week through April. For example, here is New York to Zagreb from March 5-12, 2019 for just $248 round trip.
Chicago is even cheaper at $239 RT. Boston is a bit more at $287. Various other cities are possible — you’ll just have to play with cities and dates in Momondo to find the cheapest deals.
Keep in mind that when prices are this low, it is wise to give it a couple of weeks before you make any other nonrefundable plans in case the airline gets a case of what some call “seller’s remorse”. If your reservation is still intact a couple weeks from now, it will likely be honored.
Zagreb is a very cool city with good food and prices and spring weather isn’t bad (50’s in March / 60’s in April). Years ago, I stayed at what was then the Four Points Zagreb and is now the Sheraton I believe. I booked via Priceline, had no hotel status, and didn’t know a shred about loyalty — but I still found the staff very accommodating and even scored an upgrade to a large suite. The coast is a bit warmer yet during Spring. Personally, I much preferred Split to Dubrovnik, but I think you can’t go wrong in Croatia — I’ve never had a bad meal, prices are reasonable, and people are friendly. If not for the fact that I already have a number of trips planned for next year, I’d consider this one, basic econ and all.
thank you, Nick. I’m from Croatia and just booked NYC-ZAG, a long weekend with an extra night in London, for $260. I’ve never seen prices to ZAG this low. thanks again.
Seats are available at cheap prices through May. NYC to Zagreb in May starts at a little less than $300. So you can get better weather if you want.
I sure hope this one gets honored. I spent a lot of time going day-by-day on the Cheapoair website. I couldn’t figure out a faster alternative. BTW, I wouldn’t bother looking for cashback on cheapoair. They actually raise their ticket prices if you use a cashback site. Amazing.
Hi Nick, this is off topic but I know you are sort of MS guy. quick question here. I MSed 2 months ago on hilton amex for anniversary award and delta platinum for MQD waiver. It does not show that big spend portion towards neither $15K on hilton or $25K on delta website. have you noticed recently ms with AMEX card?
There were some rumblings about this at the Chicago Seminars. I haven’t seen the status bar move an inch on my Hilton cards with any spend. The weekend night comes after anniversary, so I wouldn’t be worried unless your anniversary is long past with no free night. I think someone said the Delta MQD waiver status has been slow updating for everyone lately, but I’m not positive as I don’t carry any Delta cards.
But to add to that, I haven’t had any issue with earning points on Amex cards for spend, regardless of what I’m spending on. I never MS towards a spending bonus (welcome bonus, extra spending offer, etc), but haven’t had a problem with MS otherwise.
Thanks Nick. I got miles in my delta account by spending but MQD does not move. You are right. I had SPG biz targeted spending offer in Sept spending $20K for additional 40K pts. I’ve done it with MS but It does not show anything. I should’ve talked to you earlier lol. Thanks Nick.
Thanks. Just booked RT Chicago to Zagreb via London for $238.93. (March 14-22) So isn’t the UK departure tax almost this much? There’s no way this deal is going to be honored…
The APD you’re thinking of doesnt apply to connections.
just curious-how to choose mileage when Croatia airline and BA are different alliances? Will I get the chance to accumulate Croatia to lifemiles and all the BA flights to BA separately?
I found MSP for $333 per person. 2 layovers each way, but was able to get the way back as an overnight which actually works better traveling with the kiddo.
Nice!
