If cheap flights to Iceland from upstate New York make you feel like it’s 2015 all over again, you’re not alone. Just don’t say “WOW” this time around because it is new low-cost carrier Play offering flights from $311 round trip.

Quick Thoughts
If you’re feeling a sense of déjà vu, it’s because Iceland-based low-cost carrier WOW previously flew this route around the middle of last decade before eventually going out of business. I flew WOWin 2015 and it’s still the only time I’ve ever seen the Northern Lights. We saw the Northern Lights from the plane on the way to Reykjavik from New York. It was awesome.
New low-cost carrier Play is now offering the same route from $311 round trip this fall into winter. Availability varies by date, but I see cheap fares spanning from at least September to February.
As you would expect, these cheap fares don’t include things like seat selection and checked baggage. I used up a chunk of my Chase Ritz-Carlton Visa airline incidental credits on those things when I flew WOW, and you may want to do something similar with Play as you’ll only have a personal item included with the fare. A full size carry-on or checked bag will cost you in both directions (double the prices below round trip).
Seat selection starts around $5 each way in the back of the plane and goes up just north of $40 for seats at the front.
For those unfamiliar with Newburgh airport, it’s a very small airport about an hour north of New York City. It would not be easy to position here by flying to New York first, so keep that in mind if you’re not originating in New York State.
Personally, I’m glad to see flights returning to Newburgh. I had wondered what the future of the airport would look like when Norwegian pulled out during the pandemic. I believe that they handled the majority of flights departing Newburgh at the time.
I won’t have a chance to check this route out in the near future, but given how short these flights are, I’d be happy to take them if I were able to travel light.
