55K business class to Vietnam on some dates with Flying Blue (plus ~$400 in taxes & fees)

A reader wrote in on Instagram a couple of weeks ago with a hot tip that I just got a second to explore: Flying Blue has great pricing on select dates between select East Coast US airports and Hanoi, Vietnam, with the best deal being 55K one-way plus around $400 in taxes & fees. I don’t see a lot of availability at that price right now, but it’s great to know that one may find this kind of pricing on this route far in advance.

The Deal

  • Air France / KLM Flying Blue is offering one-way business class awards between select US airports and Hanoi, Vietnam for 55,000 miles plus around $400 in taxes and fees
  • Search for awards at airfrance.us

Quick Thoughts

As you can see in the screen shot below, I found 55K + just under $400 for a business class award from Boston to Hanoi via Paris. The first leg on that itinerary is on Air France and the second is on Vietnam Airlines.

What makes this particularly interesting is that 55K is typically the low end of what Flying Blue charges for business class just to Europe. Continuing on to Vietnam for no additional miles and just about $180 in additional taxes & fees seems like a great deal. Of course, since Air France / KLM Flying Blue has no award chart, prices could vary at any time, which means that deals like this aren’t unexpected even if it is clearly interesting.

Also keep in mind that at the time of writing there is a 20% transfer bonus from Capital One miles that runs through 7/31/23, which would mean that you could transfer 45,900 Capital One miles to Air France / KLM Flying Blue to book this if you find availability. See our Current Point Transfer bonuses page for more about current bonus opportunities.

I didn’t see a ton of availability, but the reader who reported it reported finding it from Boston, New York, and Washington-Dulles airport on select dates between March and June 2024. Keep in mind that June kicks off the rainy season in that part of the world, so you’d ideally want to find availability toward the earlier end of that spectrum.

Trying to find anything, seems this may be dead.

Use calendar view on Flying Blue (search 1 passenger, leave date blank) and you’ll see random dates still available from this month through next year

I booked this last month for two people from ORD to HAN in mid February using the 25% transfer bonus from Citi, so 44,000 TY points each. I then started looking for a way back home via Japan, but saw a deal on Qatar from Bangkok to Doha for 40,000 business or 50,000 first. Decided this might be my only 1st class flight opportunity, and thought the 8 seats and a bar would be fun, so used 100,000 American points to book. Plan to spend a few days in Doha and am now figuring out how to get back home in late March. This was my first time letting the deals determine when and where we go. I love it!

When you went to book this did it show 2 tickets available at the 55k price? I’ve been searching and I see plenty of availability over the next year but every single date only shows 1 ticket available. I’m wondering if it’s possible for multiple tickets to be available even if it’s only showing 1. Seems weird that there are so many dates available for 1 ticket but not a single day with 2.

Seth

Nvm I finally found a handful of dates with two tickets available!

Fran

Yes it did, but I think I grabbed it when it first came out, so perhaps that’s why.

I booked it yesterday. It roughly matches Flying Blue’s promo awards for this month (ex-ORD, BOS, and DEN).

Another airport with quite a bit of availability is ORD. It’s been around for over a month ;). Last fall there was quite a bit of availability from DFW/DEN at the same rate so its always good to check other gateways

Nice one. The ORD flights do show $836 in taxes and YQ though.

TimR

That amount seems to be the YQ for 2 people
