Doctor of Credit reports that there is a new in-branch offer of 70,000 Ultimate Rewards points after $4,000 in purchases in the first 3 months when you open a new Chase Sapphire Reserve card. If you are planning to apply and live near a branch, this could be an easy extra 10K points.

Quick Thoughts

In-branch offers rarely catch my eye. That is mostly because I don’t live near branches of most national chain banks but also because the hassle of going into a branch and waiting to speak to a person and listen to whatever else they want to pitch just doesn’t appeal to me unless there is a big advantage. On the other hand, if you’re able to waltz in and apply relatively quickly, it could obviously be worth 10K extra points.

While Chase used to be pretty good about matching a higher offer when you’ve applied recently before an increase, they have become much less reliable about that. I wouldn’t expect to be matched to this offer if you’ve recently applied. On the other hand, I always say that you hit 0% of the balls at which you do not swing. If I applied recently, I’d probably take the 45 seconds to compose a secure message and ask for a match, but I’d do so with low expectations of success.

Overall, I think most people would be better off considering the Sapphire Preferred given that card’s current 100K offer. Unless you intend to use points at 1.5c each either through Chase Travelâ„  or via Chase Pay Yourself Back in the near-term, I’d lean toward the Sapphire Preferred for now and potentially upgrading that to a Sapphire Reserve down the line if you want that card long-term but don’t need the benefits right now.

It seems that in my area (northern NJ) chase wants you to make an appointment. Otherwise an empty accounts manager will just stare at you and have endless chats with colleagues.
